The Union City city council granted final approval Tuesday evening to a school zone ordinance that establishes a standard 15 mile-per-hour speed limit in the mornings and afternoons around Union City’s three schools along Miles Avenue.
The designated school zone along Reelfoot Avenue at the Miles Avenue intersection will be eliminated.
City manager Kathy Dillon informed the council the school zone signs and flashing lights will be removed from Reelfoot Avenue.
Also during Tuesday evening’s 15-minute meeting, the council appointed Al Childrey to a three-year term on the Municipal-Regional Planning Commission, approved a $1,200 bid from Dennis Scarborough to demolish a house at 722 Greenwood St. and Mayor Terry Hailey presented city worker Bobby Reid with the David Draughon Award recognizing his more than 30 years of service to the city. The award is sponsored by the Tennessee Water and Wastewater Association.
It was announced by Hailey that Linda Reaves has decided to serve out the remainder of her term on the Personnel Advisory Board. The council still has to fill one vacancy on that board and a vacancy on the Civic Auditorium Committee.
Tuesday’s meeting was opened in prayer by city attorney Jim Glasgow Jr.
