The votes have been tallied and Weakley County followed suit with the state on Super Tuesday as Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum garnered the majority of votes in the Presidential Preference Primary.
Weakley County’s Republican tickets only offered a handful of selections, while those who cast a blue ballot could throw in a courtesy vote for President Obama as well as an uncontested assessor of property vote for David Tuck. Of the 20,634 registered voters in the county, 13 percent turned out for the primary Tuesday.
Eighty-six percent of the ballots cast were Republican, while 364 votes were on the Democratic ballot.
Santorum walked away with nearly half of the 2,339 Republican ballots in Weakley County. He garnered 1,070 votes.
Far behind Santorum was Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney with 485 votes cast in his favor in the county.
Republican candidate Newt Gingrich walked away with 565 votes and there were 160 votes in favor of Republican candidate Ron Paul.
On the Democratic ticket, Obama received 252 courtesy votes and Tuck secured his slot on the Democratic ballot in August with 342 votes.
Weakley County numbers reflected a statewide trend as Santorum, who is also a former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, took the majority of state ballots cast at nearly 40 percent.
Romney took nearly 30 percent of the votes cast. Gingrich ranked third and Paul followed with nearly 10 percent of the votes cast across the state.
The trend in the county and Tennessee varied from that across the nation, however, as Romney and Santorum appear neck-in-neck after Super Tuesday results.
Romney skimmed a victory in Ohio and claimed five other states Tuesday. Romney claimed wins in Alaska, Idaho, Vermont, Virginia and his home state of Massachusetts.
Santorum carried North Dakota, Oklahoma and, of course, Tennessee.
Gingrich managed to garner a majority of votes in his home state of Georgia.
Alabama and Mississippi’s primaries are next Tuesday, while Kansas plans to caucus Saturday.
