Smith’s HR winner
as Skyhawks sweep

Lauren Smith’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning pushed UT Martin past Southeast Missouri to complete a sweep of their softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Bettye Giles Field in Martin.
The Skyhawks trailed 1-0 after SEMO scored in the top of third inning.
UTM finished with five hits, including Kayla Wade’s single to lead off the sixth. She then stole second in front of Smith’s home run.
Casey Vincent (4-2) picked up the win, going the distance and allowing seven hits while striking out five.
Shea Cothren pitched a complete game five-hitter in a losing cause.
Becca Williams led off the ninth inning with a double and then scored the game-winning run on Leah Taylor’s base hit to give UTM a 5-4 win in the opener.
Taylor was 3-for-5 with a home run, and Williams was 3-for-4.
Chelsea Jones (12-3) worked out of trouble in the final three innings for the complete-game win.
UTM is slated to open a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Murray State on Saturday.

UTM rifle has eight
All-Academic picks

The Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association announced at the recent NCAA Rifle Champion-ships that eight UT Martin rifle student-athletes have been named to the CRCA All-Academic team.
The eight recipients of the national recognition include Jamie Arnett, Joe Barefoot, Jessica Cobb, Jennifer Garbina, Jennifer Greeves, Kelly James, Jordan Jensen and Dana Maurizio.
The academic awards complete another successful rifle campaign in 2012. The Skyhawks finished in the top-20 nationally for the 29th time in the last 30 years and also received the Ohio Valley Conference team sportsmanship award, as voted by the other student-athletes in the league.
