UK student charged
for post-game fire

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A University of Kentucky freshman has been charged with arson after an overturned car caught fire in the wake of the Wildcats’ Final Four win over Louisville on Saturday.
University officials identified Daebrion T. Hopwood of Elizabeth-town as the person arrested Thursday. Lexington Fire Battalion Chief Ed Davis told the Lexington Herald-Leader that at least two more people thought to be involved.
According to court documents, Hopwood was recorded on video putting lighter fluid on a sweat shirt, “which was then ignited and thrown into the overturned vehicle.”
Hopwood was booked into the Fayette County Detention Center on a $2,500 bond.

Liberty Bowl tenants
asked to aid upgrade

MEMPHIS (AP) — Memphis City Council member Reid Hedgepeth is proposing an upgrade of Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, but the sticking point is funding.
Hedgepeth said he would like tenants to put up a collective $500,000 per year over a 15-year span to update the 47-year-old stadium. The councilman said if stadium users won’t join in, he won’t present the renovation proposal, according to The Commercial Appeal.
The city owns the stadium where the Auto Zone-sponsored Liberty Bowl game is played each year. The University of Memphis plays its football games there and the school has recently been accepted into the Big East Conference.
While there has been more discussion of fixing up the stadium, the city is dealing with a $47 million budget deficit for next fiscal year.
