Sons of Confederate Veterans hold April meeting

Posted: Thursday, April 12, 2012 8:00 pm

The Gen. Otho French Strahl Camp 176, Sons of Confederate Veterans, conducted its monthly meeting recently at the Obion County Museum on Edwards Street in Union City.
The meeting was called to order by Commander Danny Isbell, who led the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag and the SCV Flag Salute. Compatriot Bob Nichols led the opening prayer.
A DVD presentation of the Battle of Shiloh was shown. “This presentation was very interesting and informative,” a spokesman said, adding the timing was excellent as the 150th anniversary of the battle was marked recently.
Members learned the headstone dedication at the Holloman Cemetery near Mason Hall is scheduled for May 26. They also received an update on the cleaning of the Chambers-Holman Cemetery across the road from Memorial Gardens. Another work day is needed to complete this project, it was noted.
A formal dedication of the newly-installed Confederate soldier statue at the Parks Cemetery Ridge Confederate Memorial Plaza is scheduled for April 28 to correspond with Confederate History Month. SCV National Lt. Commander Kelly Barrows will be the program speaker for this event. Program brochures should be ready soon.
The Confederate History & Heritage Month display at the Obion County Public Library for April is complete and period items are on display. Members were encouraged to invite visitors to the library to view the exhibit. Special thanks was sent to Kathy Williams for helping arrange the display.
The May meeting has been rescheduled for May 6, due to the Mother’s Day holiday falling on the second Sunday, which is the regular meeting time for the group.
The meeting closed with 15 members and two guests in attendance. Compatriot Bob Nichols offered the closing prayer.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans is the nation’s largest Southern heritage, history and honor organization open to all male descendants of a Confederate soldier who served honorably in the War for Southern Independence.
