Three UT Martin students interning in state legislature

Three UT Martin students interning in state legislature | Jessica McKinney, University of Tennessee at Martin, Tennessee General Assembly
The Messenger 01.30.08

Three University of Tennessee at Martin students are serving as interns this semester during the 2008 Tennessee General Assembly.
Jessica McKinney of South Fulton, Wendy Elliot of Dresden and Riley Pace of Hohenwald are participating in the Tennessee Legislative Intern Program.
The program, established in 1972, provides Tennessee university students with an opportunity to work and learn in a hands-on legislative environment. Each year, 70-80 students from across the state participate in this program to learn about leadership responsibilities and to develop legislative process skills. The interns assist legislative office staff with activities and business functions.
Assignments include: Ms. McKinney, 81st District Rep. Jimmy Naifeh, Speaker of the House; Ms. Elliott, 76th District Rep. Mark Maddox, Democratic Whip; and Ms. Pace, 77th District Rep. Phillip Pinion, House Transportation Committee chair.
Ms. McKinney is a senior marketing major with a minor in political science. She is considering a career in law or in marketing.
Ms. Elliott is a senior political science major with a minor in communications. She has served as a writer for the university’s student newspaper, The Pacer.
Ms. Pace is a senior political science major with a minor in international relations. She has been a member of the Skyhawk softball team and plans to practice criminal defense or international law.
“I hope to get a better knowledge of our government,” said Ms. McKinney, who added that the internship will offer her experience and networking opportunities.
Ms. McKinney usually takes 17-18 hours a semester and the internship will only provide 12, but she added, “The experience is worth it all.”
She said she looks forward to returning to UT Martin for summer classes and for her final semester in the fall.
“I love UT Martin. I wouldn’t pick anywhere else to be,” she added.
