Kenton woman, Martin man honored at Dyersburg State

Dyersburg State Community College made its annual presentation of outstanding faculty and staff awards to five employees — including one from Kenton and one from Martin — at the recent spring conference on campus.
Julie Griggs of Kenton was awarded the DSCC Outstanding Staff Member Award, sponsored by First South Bank.
She has worked for the college for 17 years and is director of the DSCC Gibson County Center.
In her nomination statement, Mrs. Griggs’ supervisor stated she has a “strong belief in the mission of Dyersburg State and an even stronger belief and appreciation for the faculty, staff and students that make that mission come to life. Her community service is indicative of her personality and includes being a WestStar leadership graduate, a Girl Scout Leader and a Relay for Life volunteer.”
Mrs. Griggs serves on several committees on county and state levels and is active in her church.
She was chosen by former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen to serve on the Tennessee Council for Career and Technical Education and has retained the position with current Gov. Bill Haslam.
Mrs. Griggs’ supervisor also said, “She seems to perform best when she is accomplishing the impossible. While she performs a single task well, she is more content when she is performing several simultaneously.”
English instructor Scott Maness of Martin was presented with the Security Bank Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award.
He began teaching at DSCC in August 2009 and has taught three to four developmental writing courses each semester since then. He now also tutors in the DSCC Writing Centers on the Dyersburg campus and at the Gibson County Center.
His coordinator said, “His smile is ever present and he brightens the hallways; more importantly, he positively impacts everyone with whom he comes into contact and he is truly dedicated to the success of our students. He shows up to teach or for training with a smile and the desire to learn as well as teach. Colleagues from other disciplines have taken notice of the great job he is doing as well; he was nominated by a faculty member in the Math Department.”
Maness is described as being helpful, thoughtful, patient and flexible. One student is quoted as saying, “He is a GREAT instructor; he has helped me become a better writer. Thank you.”
The other faculty award recipients were Linda Weeks, an associate professor of English at DSCC, who won the Bill and Mary Adcock Outstanding Faculty Award; Bart Jowers of Dyersburg, who received the Ned Cherry Outstanding Maintenance Award, sponsored by A-1 Chemical; and Yuketa Hall of Newbern, who received the DSCC Outstanding Administrative Professional Award, sponsored by First State Bank.
Each year, members of the DSCC faculty and staff are invited to submit nominations for the awards. The recipients are chosen by a committee that includes past winners and represents various college departments.
