Yoga classes to be offered for babies, toddlers

The Messenger 01.31.08

Babies and toddlers, get ready. There’s yoga just for you.
The University of Tennessee at Martin Office of Extended Campus and Continuing Education will offer two courses of yoga for babies during February.
Baby Itsy Bitsy Yoga is designed for newborns to children nearly crawling. Baby Itsy Bitsy Yoga classes contain dozens of unique yoga postures designed to support baby’s development. Each class is filled with calming, nurturing ways to enhance bonding and improve baby’s sleep.
During a Baby Itsy Bitsy Yoga class, babies enjoy yoga while on their backs, tummies or while being held. For parents, this class is a special opportunity to meet other parents, get support and learn about baby’s emerging personality.
Tots Itsy Bitsy Yoga is designed for tots who are almost crawling to 24 months. This class is a supportive, fun-loving and active yoga practice for busy tots. Participants can bond with their child as they help them feel comfortable in their moving body, develop self-confidence and encourage their creative spirit. Tots participate according to their ability, learning style and personality. They will learn yoga through the parent’s bond with them, repetition and play.
No yoga experience is re-quired. Helen Garabedian, an Infant Developmental Movement Educator, yoga teacher and mother, created Baby Itsy Bitsy Yoga. Classes are taught by Kathleen Vandenberg, a trained Baby Itsy Bitsy yoga facilitator and mother.
Enrollment is limited and early registration is recommended. Tots Itsy Bitsy Yoga will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Fridays Feb. 8, 15, 22 and 29. Baby Itsy Bitsy Yoga will be held from 10:45-11:30 a.m. Fridays Feb. 8, 15, 22 and 29. Both classes will be taught in the Conference Room of C.E. Weldon Library at 100 Main St. in Martin.
For one time only, these sessions will be offered for free.
For more information about the class, visit the Web site www.ItsyBitsyYoga.com. To register, call the ECCE at 1-800-482-5199 or (731) 881-7082 or register online at www.utm.edu/departments/ecce/non_credit_registration.php.
