Reception to meet
new UC coaches
The Union City High School Booster Club will host a meet-and-greet reception to welcome the school’s three new assistant football coaches on Sunday.
The get-togther will be held at the Obion County Public Library from 2-4 p.m.
UC principal Wes Kennedy recently announced the hiring of Ricke Mallory, John Diehl and Wade Maddox to assist Darren Bowling with the Tornado program.
Mallory is a five-year NFL veteran and coached the offensive line at The University of Memphis, while Diehl brings more than 30 years of experience in the education and sports business after tenures in both Florida and New York. Maddox has served as the defensive coordinator at West Carroll and is currently the War Eagles’ head baseball coach.
The public is invited to Sunday’s reception.
OC’s ‘Best’ start
is shutout win
Obion Central continued its winning ways in the pool portion tournament of the Best of the West Soccer Tournament in Jackson Tuesday with a 3-0 triumph over Sacred Heart.
OC (8-2-1) got the only goal it would need when Eric Torres found the net three minutes before halftime.
Central essentially salted the match away in the first few minutes of the second half with a pair of quick goals.
Jose Camacho took a pass from Torres and scored, before Torres then found Jackson Smith for another tally and the eventual final margin.
Samuel Smith was credited with the shutout in goal for the Rebs.
Obion Central will face Madison Academic Friday at 5 p.m. in its next game in the event at USJ.
Pitch, Hit and Run
at Elam Stadium
The Boys and Girls Club of Northwest Tennessee will host a free Pitch, Hit and Run competition 10 a.m. Saturday at Elam Stadium in Union City.
Pitch, Hit and Run is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball, with Aquafina as its title sponsor. The program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete, free of charge, in an event that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball and softball skills.
Competition is divided into four age divisions — 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14 — and participants have a chance to advance through four levels of play, including team championships at Major League ballparks and the national finals at the 2012 All-Star Game.
All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and fill out a registration/waiver form prior to the start of competition.
For more information, contact Tracy Boucher at 885-0883 or tboucher@bgcnwt.org.
Ripley remedies
SF scoring slump
South Fulton broke a long losing skid and a three-game scoring drought by triumphing over Ripley 5-2 in prep soccer Tuesday.
SF, now 3-7-2, got two goals apiece from Skyler Britt and Harrison Hawks and another from Jalen Sowell to get back in the victory column.
The Red Devils led 4-0 at the half.
Friday’s return matchup vs. Ripley has been canceled, meaning the Devils’ next match will be at Gibson County on Monday.
