The Messenger 05.02.12

Dyersburg State Community College will hold its 42nd annual commencement exercises Saturday at 2 p.m. at Dyer County High School in Newbern.
The college expects this will be the largest class in its history and anticipates degrees and/or certificates will be conferred on 367 candidates.
David Baime will be the commencement speaker.
He serves as senior vice president for government relations and research for the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). In this role, he directs the national advocacy efforts for the nation’s 1,200 community colleges and their students.
Prior to this, he served as director of education funding for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.
Baime has also worked as assistant director of government relations for the Association of American Medical Colleges.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from Haverford College and a master’s degree in economics from the London School of Economics. He has made a number of radio, television and web appearances, including on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, C-SPAN and National Public Radio, and is frequently quoted in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Education, Education Week and other education publications.
A reception to honor graduates and their guests will be held immediately following Saturday’s commencement.
For more information, contact J. Dan Gullett at (731) 286-3327.
Nurse pinning
Dyersburg State’s Division of Nursing and Allied Health expects to present nursing pins Saturday to 43 students who will complete the DSCC nursing course of study. The presentation will take place at 10 a.m. at the annual pinning ceremony in the E.H. Lannom Jr. Gymnasium on the Dyersburg campus.
The nursing pin represents completion of the associate of applied science degree requirements for nursing.
During the ceremony, awards will be presented to students who have distinguished themselves while attending DSCC.
Students who have completed the traditional and fast-track nursing programs will be participating.
The pinning event is open to the public.
