Sons of Confederate Veterans hold May meeting

Posted: Thursday, May 24, 2012 8:00 pm

The Gen. Otho French Strahl Camp 176, Sons of Confederate Veterans, conducted its monthly meeting recently at the Obion County Museum on Edwards Street in Union City.
Commander Danny Isbell opened the meeting by leading the pledge to the United States flag and the SCV Flag Salute. Compatriot Bob Nichols led the opening prayer. There was no guest speaker.
Isbell then presented The Messenger with the Tennessee Division’s annual Carmack Award for its outstanding support in reporting on the SCV camp’s activities and meetings. The award was accepted by associate editor Donna Ryder. “The SCV appreciates and recognizes their continued support of our Southern heritage,” a spokesman said.
Isbell also presented a Tennessee life membership pin to Compatriot Ronald Hayes.
Those in attendance were reminded of a headstone dedication for Pvt. Charles Henry Watts, who is buried in an unmarked grave in the Holloman Cemetery near Mason Hall. The dedication is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. Visitors are welcome.
Work continues on the clean up of the Chambers-Holman Cemetery across the road from Memorial Gardens. Another work day is needed to complete this project, it was noted.
The formal dedication of the newly-installed Confederate soldier statue at the Parks Cemetery Ridge Confederate Memorial Plaza conducted on April 28 was another great event, a spokesman said. Compatriot Dave Faulkner was presented the Commanders Commendation Medal for his dedication to this project during the ceremony.
Members were told the display at the Obion County Public Library in April for Confederate History & Heritage Month was another huge success. Thanks were expressed to all who donated items and helped in any way in making this year’s display another great success.
The camp extended sympathy and condolences to the family of Compatriot Ronald Coffman.
The meeting was closed in prayer by Nichols. There were 15 members and three guests in attendance.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans is the nation’s largest Southern heritage, history and honor organization open to all male descendants of a Confederate soldier who served honorably in the War for Southern Independence. For more information, call 1-800-mysouth or visit the website scvcamp176.org.
