The Messenger, May 31, 2012
VBS to begin
The Sonlight Express, this year’s Vacation Bible School theme at Calvary Baptist Church, which is located at 2250 East Reelfoot Ave. in Union City, will begin Monday and continue through June 7. Each day’s activities will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at noon. Children who are kindergarten-ready through fifth-grade-ready are invited to enjoy all the activities, Bible stories, games, snacks and music.
Parents can pre-register their children by calling 885-2961 on Friday or signing up at the door on Monday.
The Rev. Melvin Poe is pastor.

Hicks to preach
The Rev. Murl Hicks, former pastor of First Assembly of God in Union City, will be the guest speaker Sunday at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Church of God in Christ in Tiptonville.
Elder Curtis McLendon and the congregation invite the community to join them for praise and worship.

Aviation theme chosen
Union City Second Baptist Church will be hosting “Amazing Wonders Aviation: Encountering God’s Awesome Power” Vacation Bible School Monday through June 8 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. The event is for children from kindergarten through fifth grade.
The whole idea is for children to watch amazing things happen as they encounter God like never before, against the backdrop of some of the world’s most marvelous natural wonders, a spokesman said. This will involve trips to Victoria Falls, Great Barrier Reef, Paricutin Volcano, Northern Lights, the Grand Canyon and the Matterhorn.
Children are encouraged to bring pennies for the VBS offering that will go to support orphans in El Salvador and families in East Tennessee.
Family Night will be Wednesday, beginning at 4:30 with inflatables and games, free food and family fellowship.
Parents are asked to contact the church to register children for VBS and to make arrangements for pickup.

To sell chicken dinners
PEOC Ministry will be selling fried chicken dinners at 2131 Nailling Drive for $6 Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The menu will include fried chicken, candied yams, green beans, rolls, desserts and soft drinks.
On Sunday, the church will be selling fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans, rolls, dessert and soft drinks from 2-3:30 p.m.
Both events will feature dine-in or carry-out meals.
For more information or to order, call 592-0438.

VBS to begin
Children attending Fulton First Baptist Church’s Vacation Bible School will be “flying” to some of the greatest natural wonders in the world and encountering God’s awesome power as they begin “Amazing Wonders Aviation” 9 a.m.-noon Monday through June 8. The church is located at 115 Second St.
VBS is open to children who are 3 years old to those who have completed sixth grade.
Family Night is planned from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
For more information, go to the church’s Facebook page.

To begin video series
Home Street Church of God in Union City will begin a video series based on the New York Times bestseller, “The Harbinger,” by Rabbi Jonathan Cahn Wednesday at 7 p.m. The series will continue each Wednesday night for 10 weeks.
In the series, Cahn’s messages, which inspired the writing of the book, will be shown in their entirety.
In these messages, Rabbi Cahn parallels modern-day America with ancient Israel, the nation that received a series of warnings or harbingers before it ceased to exist as a nation. These same warnings have now appeared in America over the last 10 years.
These messages will be awe-inspiring and thought-provoking, according to a spokesman, who added that every American needs to see them.
The public is invited to attend for what could be a life-changing experience for those who hear, see and understand the warnings, a spokesman said.

Woman’s Day planned
Friendship Free Will Baptist Church will sponsor the annual Woman’s Day program Sunday at 3 p.m., with Nancy Simmons of Dyersburg as the guest speaker. The church is located at 1304 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Union City.
The community is invited to attend.

Soul Food offered
Exchange Street Church of Christ will offer a free menu that includes hot dogs, chili dogs, frito chili pie, salad and dessert Wednesday from 5:30-7 p.m. at Soul Food Café. The church is located at 420 Exchange St. in Union City.
The youth band  Overflow from Union City First United Methodist Church will be performing contemporary Christian music at the event and there will also be a corn hole toss game for those who join the church family.
Everyone is invited to attend.
