Scramble to aid
Red Devil golf
The South Fulton Booster Club’s 3rd annual four-person golf scramble is scheduled for July 21 at Fulton Country Club.
Play begins at 9 a.m., and entry fee is $200 per team or $50 per person.
Businesses and individuals can sponsor a hole for $50.
Lunch will be served after the scramble. Door prizes and a cash prize will be awarded.
All proceeds go to the South Fulton High School boys’ and girls’ golf teams.

Vandy’s Franklin
admits joke bad
DESTIN, Fla. (AP) — Vanderbilt coach James Franklin is apologizing for what he calls an attempt at humor saying he considers the looks of an assistant coach’s wife before deciding whether to hire.
The coach apologized in a string of comments on Twitter on Thursday for comments he made Wednesday to a Nashville radio station, 104.5 The Zone, broadcasting beachside in Destin. Franklin said on the show that he will not hire someone until seeing the man’s wife first to see if she looks like a “D1 recruit.”
Franklin wrote on Twitter that his attempt at humor “fell a few yds short. Was speaking to the courage it takes 4 men 2 approach the women who become their wives!!!!!”
“I clearly used language that doesn’t reflect my views on women and I am SORRY!” Franklin wrote.
But his comments during the Southeastern Conference annual meetings also landed him a talk with his boss, Vanderbilt vice chancellor David Williams.
“We discussed how inappropriate and offensive his statements were no matter his state of mind or intent,” Williams said in a statement posted on Vanderbilt’s website. “Coach Franklin is clearly aware of his mistake and is sorry for any hurt that resulted from his statements.
Clearly his comments do not reflect the values and hiring practices of Vanderbilt University, Vanderbilt Athletics or Vanderbilt Football.”
Franklin is heading into his second season as a head coach.
He led Vanderbilt to a 6-7 record and a berth in the Liberty Bowl in 2011, just the Commodores’ second bowl game since 1982. Franklin also wrote that as a husband and father of two daughters that he regrets how he “conveyed my message.”
But the coach also wrote that a man able to convince the woman of his dreams to marry him can do just about anything with that type of confidence into coaching.
Crimson Tide hires
personnel coach
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama football coach Nick Saban has hired Paul Gonnella as director of player personnel.
Gonnella spent last year in the same post at Purdue. He replaces Ed Marynowitz, who recently left to take a job with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Gonnella’s main responsibility will be directing recruiting for the defending national champion Crimson Tide. He will also assist with camps, clinics and other football-related events.
Gonnella was director of player personnel at Memphis in 2010 and has worked at Miami, Tennessee and North Carolina in similar roles and capacities. He has also coached at high schools in Georgia and his native Massassuchetts, including a head coaching stint at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge, Mass.
