Cruelty charged

A Union City woman was charged with animal cruelty after police found a dog that had apparently been neglected to the point of death.
Karen Michelle Hayslett, 48, of 2320 Norwood Drive, Union City, was issued a citation charging her with animal cruelty at 9:39 p.m. Sunday after being found in custody of a dog that appeared to have starved to death, according to a Union City Police Department report and the citation.
Police had been dispatched to Ms. Hayslett’s residence earlier in the day in reference to a dog that likely starved to death. An officer arrived to find a light brown dog, which wasn’t moving, in a pen behind the house. The officer reported it was obvious the dog was no longer alive. He reported there was no food or fresh water in the pen and the dog’s waste appeared to mainly contain dry grass.
Ms. Hayslett told police Sunday night that she is afraid of all dogs and had nothing to do with the animal. She claimed her son and ex-husband had agreed to feed and care for the dog, according to the report. Ms. Hayslett was cited into city court.
