Speed to finish career
with Union University
Former Union City High School baseball player Colton Speed will complete his college eligibility at Union University in Jackson.
Speed, who was a three-sport (baseball, football, basketball) standout his senior year with the Tornadoes, will transfer to UU for his final season on the collegiate level, he said Monday.
Speed played this past spring at Murray State after two seasons at State College of Florida where he helped the Manatees to the junior college world series his freshman year.
After completing his juco eligibility, he hit .267 in his only campaign for the Racers with an on-base percentage of .345. He had 28 hits and scored 13 runs in 105 at-bats while playing in 40 of MSU’s 56 games. Speed made just two errors and 45 chances while playing the outfield.
His season ended prematurely when he broke his finger late in the year against Kentucky in a contest in which Murray upset the nationally-ranked Wildcats.
State baseball champs
have proud local ties
The head coach of the Division II-AA state championship baseball team has local family ties.
Brad Myers, who led Battle Ground Academy to the school’s first-ever state crown with a 5-3 victory over MUS in the title game last month to cap his 19th season at BGA’s baseball mentor, is married to the former Penny Pritchett, a graduate and ex-cheerleader at Union City High School.
The Myers’ family has three daughters, Mary Bradley, Marxie and Brooke.
The coach’s in-laws are Pert and Wanda Pritchett of Union City.
Myers is the son of Stan and Leverne Myers of Hamilton, Ohio.
A second UCHS alumnus was also involved in a state championship run this spring.
Ben Glasgow, who prepped for the Tornadoes — playing both baseball and football — was an assistant coach at Arlington, which won the Class 3A Division I title in May with a 9-3 victory over Bearden to finish 33-11.
Glasgow has been at AHS for five seasons, three of which have resulted in state tournament appearances.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Glasgow Jr., and Mrs. Karen Farmer.
The younger Glasgow is married to the former Julie Haynes, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Haynes of Obion County.
