Red Devilettes win
in Belote’s debut

A new era in South Fulton soccer is off to a very good start after the Devilettes spanked Gibson County 8-0 Monday in their season-opener.
Desiray Sturgeon had five goals and three assists as SF routed the Pioneers in the head coaching debut of Emily Belote.
A former three-sport standout at Westview, Belote took over the South Fulton girls’ program this season on a paraprofessional basis.
“The team did a great job,” Belote said. “I was very proud of how hard they played. This was definitely a great way to begin our season.”
The new coach certainly had reason to celebrate as a talented and experienced SF squad took control of Monday’s match from the outset, forging a 6-0 lead by the end of the first half.
Sam Murray added South Fulton’s other three goals.
In addition to Sturgeon’s assists, Sara Reams had two assists while Murray, Carly Reams and Emilee Goodman had one each.
Taleah Cross had six saves in goal for the Devilettes.
South Fulton entertains former head coach Mixon Moore and Haywood tonight at 6.

Wildcats name Smith
starting quarterback

LEXINGTON (AP) — Kentucky coach Joker Phillips says sophomore Maxwell Smith has been named starting quarterback.
Smith started three games as a freshman after junior Morgan Newton suffered a shoulder surgery, passing 84-of-153 2011 for 819 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. He was named to the coaches’ freshman All-Southeastern Conference team.
Smith earned the job over Newton, who did not participate in spring practice due to offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum.
