UT Martin offering extended classes

Posted: Friday, August 31, 2012 3:10 pm

ACT Prep Course offered
A high score on the ACT exam could be worth thousands of dollars in scholarships for incoming college students.
High school students who wish to improve their scores are encouraged to enroll in an ACT prep course, available through the University of Tennessee at Martin Office of Extended Campus and Online Studies. The course will meet from 8 a.m.-noon on Saturdays, Sept. 15–Oct. 20, on the main UT Martin campus.
Participants will use materials developed by Cambridge Educational Services. Students will learn how to complete test problems based on frequency, difficulty, substantive knowledge, curriculum and alternative test-taking strategies.
Students will take both a pre- and post-test under real testing conditions to determine individual skills and abilities. Each test is scored by Cambridge and students are given assessment reports with which to create a personal study plan. Students should bring an ACT approved calculator, if desired, and two No. 2 pencils to the first class meeting for the pre-test.
The registration fee for the course is $225 per person, and includes two textbooks, two official ACT tests and diagnostic reports. The textbooks for the course are the ACT Cambridge textbook and The Big Book of Skills textbook, both 11th editions.
To register for the course, contact ECOS at 881-7082, or register online at http://www.utm.edu/departments/ecce/non_credit_registration.php.
Basic Photography Course offered
Amateur and aspiring photographers wanting to learn about basic camera operations and improve their photographic skills are invited to participate in Digital Photography Part I from 6:30-9 p.m. on Tuesdays, Sept. 4-25, in Martin. The course is offered through the University of Tennessee at Martin Office of Extended Campus and Online Studies.
Dr. Tom Gallien, instructor, will discuss proper photographic exposure, composition and use of histograms. Printed and email handouts will supplement the presentations and email will be used to evaluate and critique student photographs throughout the course.
This course is designed primarily for beginning photographers, but ideas for intermediate photographers will also be discussed. Digital Photography Part I is an introductory course for the Intermediate/Advanced photography course, also offered through ECOS.
Students should bring a digital camera and its instructional manual to class if possible. A small notepad and pencil are also encouraged. The registration fee is $125 per person. Contact ECOS at 881-7082 for more information.
