Rebel, UC runners
fast at area meets

Obion Central did well late last week, and Union City had a top 10 runner over the weekend.
OC won the girls’ meet and finished fourth in the boys’ run of the Trenton Peabody Invitational on Thursday, while Union City’s Daniel Williamson finished an impressive seventh in his field at the prestigious Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic cross country event in Memphis on Saturday night.
The Golden Tornado senior clocked a time of 16:45, just 18 seconds off the winning time.
The prep varsity boys’ field included 322 runners representing schools from throughout Tennessee and several surrounding states.
The all-day event went into Sunday as well due to a weather delay.
The event includes races for middle school teams, high school junior varsity and varsity squads, and college teams.
UT Martin and Bethel competed on the collegiate level.
The Lady Rebels topped a field of eight girls’ teams, led by individual runner-up Rachel Jones.
Tia Parks was third, Nichole Watson placed fifth and Brenna Wilkins was 15th.
Central’s boys were fourth out of 13 teams, Jaime Torres medaling with a No. 15 finish.
The Rebs and William-son will run at Crockett County this afternoon.

Ex-Central tandem
key in historic win

Former Obion County Central football standouts Trey Phipps and Mason McGrew were part of Lindenwood-Belleville’s history-making gridiron victory Saturday.
Phipps, an all-stater as a prep senior and The Messenger’s Co-Player of the Year in 2011 when he threw for more than 3,000 yards and 38 touchdowns, threw the Lynx’ first-ever scoring pass in the first quarter of a 43-37 win over Avila University. It also marked the first points scored in L-B history.
Phipps started the contest and completed 3-of-7 passes for 60 yards with his 28-yard scoring toss to Harvey Binford included.
McGrew, who caught 43 balls including nine for scores in his senior campaign for OCCHS, was on the receiving end of a two-point conversion in the third quarter after entering the game in the second period.
Lindenwood-Belleville will play its first road game this weekend, at Oklahoma Panhandle State — a Division II school — in Goodwell, OK, Saturday night. Published in The Messenger 9.4.12
