All was well that ended well for South Fulton.
After blowing a five-run lead late, the Devilettes scored the deciding run in the bottom of the seventh for a 10-9 middle school softball victory over Lake Road Tuesday.
SF is now 2-2, while LR fell to 0-3.
In other middle school results reported from Tuesday, Hillcrest beat Hickman County 10-0. There was no report from the Martin-Ridgemont game, though the Lady Mustangs did drop a 12-0 decision.
On the football field, Union City Middle School drubbed Lake County 48-14.
Thursday’s middle school sports schedule has three football games (Hillcrest at Dresden, Heath at South Fulton and Ridgemont at Lake Road), and one softball game (Martin at Union City) on the slate.
Coaches are encouraged to report the particulars of their games to the newspaper by 9 a.m. the morning following those games.
The following is a recap of those Tuesday games reported to The Messenger.
SOFTBALL
SF 10, Lake Road 9
The Devilettes overcame five errors to square their record.
Winning pitcher Katie Clapper, Kennedy Sisson, Abby Fulcher and Brittney Proctor all had hits for SF, which scored three in the first and four times in the third.
Only four of Lake Road’s runs were earned against Clapper. She struck out four, walked one and gave up eight hits.
For the Lady Generals, Jenna Smith reached base five times with three hits, a walk and via an error. Shelby Mosley and Avery Johnson also had hits.
Smith, Johnson and Lindsey Craddock all were lauded for their defense by head coach Emily McGee.
South Fulton’s next action is Monday at Martin, while LR will participate in the Obion Central/Hillcrest Invitational on Saturday.
Hillcrest 10, HC 0
McClain Bell went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in to help the Lady Cougars improve to 3-1.
Olivia Matherly had a single, double and two RBIs, while Audrey Myers had two hits and two ribbies.
Lauren Ivy, Mary Hanna Short, Hannah Fulbright and Macey Cox had one hit each.
Cox was the winning hurler with nine strikeouts and just one hit allowed.
Hillcrest will be the host team this weekend in an invitational tournament played at Obion Central and Hillcrest.
FOOTBALL
UC 48, Lake Co. 14
Union City scored four touchdowns in the second quarter in blowing out Lake County in middle school football Tuesday night at War Memorial Stadium.
Jeremy Bumpus scored three of those second-quarter TDs on runs of four, 45 and five yards with Cooper Hurt throwing a conversion pass to Austin Meadows following the second of those scores.
Hurt had a 36-yard scoring run to start the second quarter blitz.
UC led 8-0 at the end of the first quarter on a 15-yard TD run by Taeshawn Allen and a conversion scamper from Bumpus.
Allen then scored on a four-yard run in the third period and a 45-yard run in the fourth period. Hurt threw a conversion pass to Kaleb Dowell following UC’s final score.
Bumpus had seven tackles and an interception, Allen added five tackles and Lazzarus Scribner picked off a pass for the Golden Tornadoes.
Union City improves to 3-0 and will host South Fulton Sept. 13, kickoff at 6:30 p.m.
