Remember when takes a look back at the local stories from the files of The Messenger that took place 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago.
30 Years Ago
Sept. 8 — Union City quarterback Aaron Dearmitt was named the Player of the Week by the West Tennessee Sportswriters Association after having a hand in all five Tornado touchdowns in his team’s 35-8 season-opening victory over Stewart County. Dearmitt threw three TD passes and ran for two more scores to win the award given by a group made up of 12 daily and weekly newspapers. UC receiver Tracey Bruff received honorable mention for the award.
Sept. 10 — Tremelle McFall scored four touchdowns to lead Union City’s Middle School football team to a 46-12 romp over Fulton City. Jason Carter and Chris Huffstetler lauded praise from head coach Jerry McClain for their defensive effort. South Fulton was also a winner in junior high play, edging Dixie 8-0. The Devils’ lone TD came on a screen pass from Dan Faulkner to Billy Bransford that covered 51 yards. Reggie Chambers tacked on the two-point conversion.
20 Years Ago
Sept. 7 — All three Obion County prep football teams were winners in their season debuts, Central a 21-7 victor over Caruthersville (Mo.); Union City a 21-20 survivor over Graves County; and South Fulton on top of Gleason 34-16. Mike Terry had two touchdowns and 184 total yards for the Rebels, who unveiled a two-platoon system without an official head coach. UC survived a failed Graves County two-point conversion with 49 seconds to play and got short TD runs by Chris Wiggins, Marcus Lewis and Chris Smith. SF received 101 yards rushing and two scores from Brian James.
Sept. 9 — The Union City boys and South Fulton girls prevailed in a prep golf match involving all three Obion County entries. Billy Dowell was the medalist for the victorious Tornadoes with a 39 with teammate Jason Wood shooting a 42. Robert Brasfield of Central and the Red Devils’ Peter Toon both led their respective teams with 43s. In girls’ play, SF’s Mikki McLeary came in with a 43 to pace the field while Tara Heath posed UC’s best score with 60. Obion Central did not field a girls’ squad for the competition.

Sept. 9 — All of Obion County and particularly the Obion Central student body and football program was mourning the tragic death of Rebel football player Chris Phelon, who died in a one-vehicle accident a little more than 24 hours after he helped OC to a thrilling 34-28 win over Ripley. Phelon had caught four passes for 76 yards, including a critical 29-yarder on a late game-tying drive, and also had five tackles to aid Central in its first 2-0 start to a season in 19 years. Phelon was the team’s No. 2 pass-catcher the year before as a sophomore.
Sept. 10 — Obion County Central quarterback Wes Moore was named the Associated Press Class 3A Player of the Week for all of Tennessee after scoring five touchdowns in the Rebels’ exciting comeback triumph over Ripley. Moore threw for 309 yards and four TDs and ran for a fifth. Teammate Brian Kissell, who grabbed 11 of Moore’s completions for 234 yards and three touchdowns, was an honorable mention for the award.

Sept. 7 — Ridgemont won a pair of middle school softball games against local competition over a period of three days. The Lady Mustangs beat Union City 4-2 when Kayla Bramlett struck out nine and both Madylin Hamilton and Emily Pickard each had two hits. In a 21-3 thrashing of Lake Road, Peyton Daniel had two singles and stole four bases after swiping five bags against UC. Pickard went 3-for-3 against the Lady Generals.
Sept. 10 — Jacob Worley and Josh Nicks had monster games on the defensive side for Union City in a 34-6 prep football victory over Lake County in which the Tornadoes forced six touchdowns. Worley had 15 tackles in all, 12 of those of the solo variety, and also recovered a fumble. Nicks recorded nine tackles total, forced two fumbles with bone-jarring hits and also came up with an interception.

Sept. 12 — Ninth-ranked Obion Central scored 28 unanswered points over a 10-minute span to improve to 4-0 for just the third time in the football program’s 51-year history with a 48-18 triumph over Crockett County. Trey Phipps threw four touchdown passes and LaDevin Fair ran for three scores for the Rebels who broke an eight-game losing skid against CC.
Sept. 12 — Brooke Jennings scored every goal in Obion Central’s 3-1 soccer victory over Trenton Peabody. Taylor Baker was solid in goal for the Lady Rebels who improved to 3-3-1 with the win. Published in the Messenger 9.6.12 |
