Fugitive pursuit leads to arrest

An incident, which allegedly began in downtown Martin Tuesday evening, had the potential to become deadly, not once, but twice for community members as well as a sheriff’s investigator.
Martin Police officers were called to Ritual Ink on University Street in Martin shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday for a report of assault.
According to an incident report, the victim said Robert Elee Gordon, 29, of South Fulton walked into the business and allegedly accused the victim of sleeping with his girlfriend.
Gordon was apparently asked to leave when he pulled out a pellet gun and fired a shot at the window of the business. He left the scene, only to be discovered several hours later in Palmersville by Weakley County Sheriff’s Inv. Eric Smith.
Smith said he noticed a vehicle driving about 10 miles per hour behind him. When the investigator pulled over to allow the car to go around, the driver revved his engine and sped away.
Smith said when he attempted to conduct an investigative stop, the vehicle took off, prompting a vehicle pursuit into Henry County.
It was then that the driver of the vehicle turned around in an attempt to hit Smith’s car. Smith said he dodged him at the last second and he lost the vehicle when he attempted to turn around in pursuit.
The vehicle was later found engulfed in flames on Highway 140 in Como by Trooper Josh Wade, according to the Henry County Sheriff’s Department.
Gordon was taken in custody by Trooper Wade and charged with implied consent, leaving the scene of an accident and DUI 1st offense.
He also faces charges of reckless driving, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment by the WCSD. In addition, Gordon’s alleged actions in Martin prompted charges of vandalism, reckless endangerment (serious use of a deadly weapon) and aggravated assault filed against him by the Martin Police Department.
He is being held in the Henry County Jail and will have to undergo the judicial process in that county before being brought back to Weakley County to face additional court proceedings.
