Greenfield, Lion ‘D’ get stingy

Posted: Wednesday, September 12, 2012 12:00 pm

Weather-shortened games in the county gave Greenfield its first win of the season, and Dresden’s defense turned in a five-interception night on Thursday in middle school football action.
Lightning caused Green-field and Gleason to call the game off at halftime, giving the Yellowjackets the 16-0 win.
At Dresden it was all about the Lions’ defense as they scored twice on interception returns in a 38-0 win over Hillcrest.
G’field 16, Gleason 0
The ’Jackets picked up their first win of the season on a stormy Thursday and mistake-filled night by the Bulldogs in Greenfield.
Greenfield’s defense kept the Bulldogs out of the end zone with three fumble recoveries, one leading to a Will Northcutt-to-Truman Greub 26-yard touchdown pass with 5:13 to play in the second quarter.
Greenfield took full control of the first quarter with a steady running attack.
The Yellowjackets had 14 plays on a 54-yard drive, capped off by Northcutt’s two-yard run with 41.6 seconds to play in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs ran the final two plays of the quarter with Ryan Cole fumbling and Greenfield’s Preston Adams recovering to end the quarter.
Northcutt hit Greub for a 17-yard pass to set up the 26-yard TD toss. A bad snap by Gleason then gave the ball right back to the ’Jackets at the Bulldogs’ 37.
Gleason got the ball back after holding Greenfield on four downs and moved the ball downfield on runs of 11 and 21 yards by Cole.
The Bulldogs got down to the nine yard line when the ball was stripped from Cole at the five and recovered by Jacob Lewis with 43.5 seconds to play in the half.
With lightning intensifying, the coaches and officials decided to call the game during the halftime break. Dusty Irby had 44 yards rushing on 11 carries. Northcutt had two touchdowns — one rushing and one passing — for Greenfield. Cole had 47 yards on five carries.
Greenfield will be at home against Trinity Christian on Thursday, while Gleason travels to McKenzie on Thursday.
Dresden 38, Hillcrest 0
It was all defense for the Lions on Thursday as the host team did not let Hillcrest get any kind of drive going.
Dresden held Hillcrest to a three-and-out to start the game, and Quincey McDonald returned the punt 55 yards for TD. McDonald then intercepted a pass to end Hillcrest’s second drive. From there, Dresser Winn completed a TD pass to Cade Rogers.
Hudson Nanney intercepted a pass to put a stop to Hillcrest’s third drive of the game.
Winn scored on a 50-yard run on the Lions’ second possession to make it a 24-0 in the first quarter.
Ricco Taylor grabbed an interception and returned it for a score on the last play of the first quarter to make it 32-0 game after the two-point conversion. Zech Lewis got in on the interception act for the Lions in the second quarter and returned it for score to close out the scoring for Dresden.
Tyrone Jones also had an interception for Dresden. Worsening weather conditions forced the game to be called at the half. For the night, Dresden had two defensive TDs, one punt return for a score and two offensive TDs.
Dresden will be at Huntingdon on Thursday. Published in The WCP 9.11.12
