Loss in first set
does in Union City
A heartbreaking loss in the first set seemed to deflate Union City for the rest of its match.
The Lady Tornadoes dropped a 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-19) decision to Mayfield in prep volleyball action Tuesday night at the UC gymnasium.
Union City rallied from a 17-10 deficit in the first set and was one point from a win at 24-23 only to see the Lady Cardinals (3-13) score the final three points for the win.
UC then never threatened in the second set and saw Mayfield score 11 of the final 12 points in the third set.
Brittany Parker had five aces, 28 passes, two kills and 18 digs for Union City. Raven Fair added three aces and 48 pass attempts, while Sadie Hollis had 18 pass attempts and 11 digs.
Alexis Coleman added 17 pass attempts, Halle Kennedy had 12 digs and Molly Macklin added 11 digs for UC.
The Lady Tornadoes lost 2-0 (25-10, 25-17) in the junior varsity match.
Aaliyah Daniels and D’Leshae Olds each had a pair of aces, while Olds had eight digs and Dawn Meyers added six digs for UC’s jayvee squad.
Union City (0-6) is back in action today at Halls.
Dyersburg edges
Lady Reb soccer
Obion Central dropped a hard-fought 3-2 soccer match at Dyersburg Monday night.
The Lady Rebels led 2-1 at halftime on goals by Brooke Jennings and Whittney Lee.
The host Trojans, though, scored the tying goal just two minutes into the second half and then found the net with the game-winner with just eight minutes to play.
Taylor Baker had 12 saves in net for OC, and head coach Daniel Johnston lauded the defensive play of his back line in the contest.
Central, now 3-2, will play in the Liberty Shootout in Jackson this weekend, facing Northside on Friday and then Sacred Heart and Jackson South Side on Saturday.

3rd at Haywood
Obion Central’s boys’ golf team placed third in a three-way match with host Haywood and Covington Monday.
The Rebels totaled 177, behind Covington (162) and the Tomcats (170).
Brothers Korben and Klayton Hagen each shot 41 for OC’s best score. Ryan Middlebrook came in with a 47, while Cameron Green finished with a 48.
OC will play again on Thursday at Wynridge, against Haywood, Ripley and Trenton.
Lawler in hospital
after heart attack
MONTREAL (AP) — Professional wrestling commentator Jerry Lawler collapsed during a World Wrestling Entertainment event on Monday night.
A statement from the WWE said that Lawler suffered a heart attack at the announcers’ table.
Broadcast partner Michael Cole addressed the television audience and said that the situation is “serious,” but that Lawler was breathing on his own.
“Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler suffered a heart attack while commentating during last night’s broadcast of Monday Night Raw in Montreal,” the WWE said in its statement.
