UT Martin fall classic to aid fighting cancer

Posted: Friday, September 14, 2012 12:00 pm

The UT Martin softball team will host its fall classic Sept. 21-22 at the Martin Recreation Complex and Bettye Giles Field on campus. However, this year’s 18-team tournament will serve a dual purpose.
All proceeds from this year’s tournament will go toward the Susan G. Komen Foundation to support breast cancer awareness. The Skyhawk softball team has teamed up with the sisters of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, which has adopted the Susan G. Komen Foundation as its philanthrophy.
“Working with the Zetas for the Susan G. Komen Foundation is the perfect match for us,” UT Martin head softball coach Donley Canary said. “The annual push for breast cancer awareness begins the first of October. Besides the timing of this project, breast cancer is something that all of the teams in this tournament can relate to. We want to do our part to help awareness,” Canary said.
Action at the Martin Recreation Complex gets under way at 4 p.m. Sept. 21. Fifteen games will be played the first day. Teams will begin playing at 9 a.m. on Saturday and action continues through games at 5 p.m. Twenty-one games are scheduled for Saturday.
UT Martin will play Bethel at 6 p.m. on Friday at Bettye Giles Field. The Skyhawks will also play Chattanooga State at 8 p.m. at the Martin Recreation Complex.
The Skyhawks will play three games on Saturday, beginning with a 9 a.m. showdown with Campbellsville at Bettye Giles Field. The Skyhawks will play Columbia State at 11 a.m. and wrap up the tournament with a 3 p.m. game against Rend Lake.
T-shirts and concessions will be available throughout the weekend. Admission to the tournament is $5 per person.
“We would like to encourage people to come out and enjoy the softball games and help us raise some money for breast cancer awareness,” Canary said.

The UT Martin softball team won the regular season championship, the Ohio Valley Conference tournament and advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament where it played national champion Alabama. Published in The WCP 9.13.12
