Remember when takes a look back at the local stories from the files of The Messenger that took place 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago.
30 Years Ago
Sept. 14 — Troy erased a halftime deficit to beat Dixie 20-8 in Obion County junior high football. The Rebels had taken an 8-0 advantage into the dressing room via a Chad Northam 60-yard touchdown and the subsequent two-point conversion by Stevie Moran. The Trojans came alive in the second half, though, getting touchdown runs of 25 and 23 yards from David Spalding and a short scoring plunge by Scottie Easley to win for the second time in as many games.
Sept. 17 — South Fulton’s Jr. Red Devils prevailed in a 6-0 defensive struggle that went into overtime. Billy Bransford’s run up the middle on a 4th-and-2 ended the game, but not until after a host of SF players made key plays on defense during regulation. Courtney Horton had a fumble recovery and both Ricky Duncan and Albert Burnside recorded interceptions for the Redmen. Duncan also jumped on a free ball bobbled by the Pilots in the OT session to thwart a possession.
20 Years Ago
Sept. 14 — Union City, which entered the Class 2A state rankings four days later at No. 8, was impressive in blasting Covington 36-0. While the result was not unexpected, the margin certainly was as the Chargers had won six straight games and were expected to challenge for a playoff berth. Chris Wiggins accumulated 160 yards rushing and receiving and caught a pair of Marcus Lewis touchdown passes to lead UC offensively. Demetrius Jones also found paydirt twice. Linebackers Matt Smith and David Isbell recorded nine tackles apiece to pace the shutout.
Sept. 16 — Noseguard Michael Allen, who was a disruptive force in the middle of a South Fulton defense that held Greenfield to just six total yards in a 27-2 Red Devil victory, was named the Messenger’s Defensive Player of the Week. Allen made 14 tackles in all — six of those behind the line of scrimmage. He also forced a pair of Yellowjacket fumbles.

Sept. 16 — Obion Central, South Fulton and Union City were all victors in prep football action. The Rebels — playing for the first time since burying teammate Chris Phelon who was killed the week before in a car accident — were understandably sluggish before turning it on and beating Lake County for the sixth straight time, 44-7. Kyle Ross threw two TD passes and Wes Moore three for Central. SF got two touchdowns apiece from both Da’Ryan Jones and Michael Alford in a 34-0 whitewashing of shorthanded Fulton City, while UC’s Kenneth Fouse rushed for 160 yards and four scores in the Tornadoes’ 35-18 win over Memphis Trezevant.
Sept. 17 — After catching six passes for 205 yards and two TDs, Obion Central’s Colby McBride was named the Associated Press Class 3A Player of the Week. McBride hauled in a 63-yard pass from Kyle McBride, then was on the receiving end of an 88-yarder from Wes Moore in OC’s 37-point romp over Lake County. It marked the second straight week the Rebels had won the statewide award — Moore earlier earning the honor.

Sept. 13 — A team sprinkled with local tennis players won the United States Tennis Association Super Senior 7.0 State Tournament in Kentucky. Union Citians Margie Smith, Maggie Vaughn and Joe Smith were members of the title roster.
Sept. 18 — The South Fulton Middle School softball team gave up just one run in five games to win the Lake County Invitational. That lone tally came in a loss, however, to Lake Road, 1-0. SF (15-1) avenged that setback by beating the Lady Generals twice in the title round, 5-0 and 10-0. Haley McKinney, Kaci Daugherty, Macey Maxwell, Lexi Johnson and Taylor Archie starred for the Big Red in the championship game. Macy Allison (28 strikeouts) and Alex Wilson (12) helped pitch LR into the finals.

Sept. 13 — Union City’s Mollie Stone and the South Fulton High School girls’ golf team won district golf championships at The Farms in Dyersburg. Stone easily beat the field in individual play, winning by 18 shots with a 78. McKenzee Pane, Sydney Easterwood and Sierra Coley made up a Devilette unit that earned the school’s first district title in more than 10 years. The SF boys’ team placed second to host Dyersburg, while Obion Central’s girls edged UC to join the local contingent in the regional tournament set for Milan. South Fulton’s Chase Mayfield was beaten in sudden-death for medalist honors on the boys’ side but remained alive in his bid for a third straight state tournament trip.
Sept. 19 — J.P. Fowler scored the first of his five touchdowns just 52 seconds into the game to get South Fulton off to a quick start and ultimately a 39-20 win over Halls. Fowler ended with 145 yards rushing and teammate Cody Tatum added 107 on the ground for the Redmen. Union City was a 42-13 homecoming winner over Greenfield behind three TDs from Khiry Lewis, while OC scored 48 first-half points in extending Gibson County’s long losing streak, winning 48-0.
