| UC remains ranked — barely — after another lost showdown |

A second loss to a Top 10 opponent did not completely knock Union City from the state rankings.
The Golden Tornadoes, who dropped a 28-14 decision to Class 2A’s No. 2 team (unbeaten Dresden) Friday, fell just one spot to No. 9 in the latest Associated Press Single-A poll released Monday afternoon.
Educated voters across the state likely considered the quality of UC’s foe or maybe the fact that standout fullback Keylon Hyde was knocked from the Twister lineup in the second series with a concussion and did not play for the remainder of the contest.
At any rate, Union City — now 4-2 after losses to the Lions and Huntingdon — remained among the elite in statewide balloting of sports writers and broadcasters. The Tornadoes collected 31 points.
West Carroll (5-1) changed spots with the Purple and Gold, moving to No. 8 with its fifth straight victory, a 34-20 triumph over winless Gibson County.
Unbeaten Greenback overtook season-long No. 1 South Pittsburg for the top position in Class 1A after the Pirates lost a 55-54 shootout to 4A Signal Mountain. SP (4-1) is now second after the setback and Greenback’s 41-6 thumping of Cloudland that improved the Cherokees’ mark to 6-0.
Huntingdon, which bounced back from an upset loss to West Carroll with a 28-21 triumph vs. then eighth-ranked (3A) Camden, inched up a spot to No. 5 in Class 1A.
Dresden stayed put at No. 2 in Double-A following a solid performance against Union City last week.
The Lions actually picked up a two more first-place votes — giving them three total — but still far behind fellow unbeaten Boyd Buchanan which collected 14 of 20 first-place ballots in all.
Adamsville (5-1) is still No. 7.
Once-beaten Milan and 5-0 South Gibson remained at Nos. 5 and 6 in the Class 3A pecking order despite the fact that SG handed the Bulldogs their only setback to weeks ago. Milan hammered Crockett County 44-7 last week, while South Gibson had an open date.
The Hornets will host Obion Central (2-4) this week.
Camden, which lost standout quarterback Tanner Hudson to a ruptured spleen in its loss to Cheatham County two weeks ago, fell out of the Top 10 with its aforementioned defeat at the hands of Huntingdon that dropped its mark to 3-2.
Second-ranked Coving-ton (5-0) was joined in the 4A listing by District 13AA brethren Dyersburg, which entered the elite category in a tie for No. 10 after beating Trenton 48-27 for its fourth victory in five games.
Lexington — No. 7 after being at No. 8 last week — gives rural West Tennessee three teams in the Top 10.
Jackson Northside continues its climb in the 5A poll, now trailing only top-ranked Beech.
Former South Fulton High School standout Tab Vowell has his unbeaten JNS at 6-0 after they edged city rival Liberty 21-14 last week.
Another former Red Devil, veteran Henry County skipper James Counce, saw his remain at No. 4 despite a 63-7 hammering of West Creek.
Henry County is the defending state champion in Class 5A
University School of Jackson is now eighth and 6-0 in the Division II rankings.
While Greenback took over No. 1 in 1A, all other top-ranked teams last week held their spots.
Maryville (6-0) stayed atop in 6A, as did Beech (6-0) in 5A, Giles County (5-0) in 4A, CAK in 3A and Ensworth, which is nationally-ranked in some polls, in Dvision II.
