Now that’s more like it.
Order has indeed been restored in the world of Friday football finals forecasting with the return to power of the practically-perfect prep pigskin prognosticator.
The Hitman — easily the game’s greatest gridiron guru — has resumed his customary position above the coveted .800 line after having briefly fallen below that magical mark and much to the delight of a scattered handful of the usual naysayers.
A 22-3 (.880) showing last week brought the still-sensational sideline soothsayer to .806 (108-26) for the season, renewing the floundering faith of those few who believed for even a second the unmatched all-knowing augur would not achieve his customary status for a 26th straight year.
Hoping to again warm up his usual hot seat, the peerless prophet makes these calls from his familiar lofty perch.

TRENTON @ UNION CITY — While Peabody’s much-improved status isn’t evident in its 2-3 record, it must be noted that the Tide’s losses have come vs. Milan, Huntingdon and Dyersburg — each with just one setback and currently state-ranked in their respective classification. Trenton has showed plenty of offensive firepower, averaging over 30 points-per-game, and has been fingered recently as a sleeping giant in the district with an athletic roster as good as anybody’s. UC, meanwhile, has been an enigma in its two biggest games against quality competition — both of which were losses. A defense that was forecasted to be strong against the rush and physical up front has been gashed by a pair of gritty running quarterbacks and whipped more times than not by two opposing offensive lines. And Peabody has the capabilities to expose another long question mark — the Twister secondary — having thrown for 274 yards and three touchdowns in the first half last week vs. D’burg and for more than 300 yards in a shootout victory earlier against Lake County. Compound those issues with the likely absence of bruising fullback Keylon Hyde, whose presence cannot be overstated on either side of the ball, and UC appears to be in over its head. And while not ready to dismiss the Tornadoes with still a month remaining in the regular season, rough waters have seemingly redirected the Purple and Gold ship from what was thought to be smooth sailing. Perhaps this will help get the Twisters back on course. — TRENTON.
OBION CENTRAL @ SOUTH GIBSON — The Rebels — as predicted previously in this space — have gained a little bounce in their step after getting the winless monkey off their back with back-to-back victories against similarly-struggling foes. Back-to-back 400-yard efforts by the Central offense have been especially-welcomed with a good balance between the run and pass, and though unbeaten and state-ranked, South Gibson has not been especially strong defensively with opponents averaging 23 ppg. The Hornets do, however, have two of the upper echelon playmakers OC will see in the Walden brothers, Carlos and Quincy. A threat to go the distance on any one snap, the Walden siblings — coupled with a senior class 19-strong — gives South Gibson the look of a program capable of running the regular season table rather than one in just its second full season of varsity competition. And while confidence and momentum makes Obion Central dangerous, the projected injury absence of OC’s best playmaker (Bryce Warner) and the fact that SG has had an extra week via an open date to rid itself of the hangover after stunning Milan, reduces the percentages of a possible upset. — SOUTH GIBSON.
GREENFIELD @ SOUTH FULTON — The Red Devils’ prospective playoff condition went from serious to critical after last week’s loss to Gleason. With just two wins to-date and with Trenton, Lake County and South Fulton remaining on the schedule, getting two more that will almost assuredly lock up a postseason berth looks somewhat dicey. A win against the rapidly-improving ’Jackets is imperative but is anything but a given after G’field broke a 15-game losing skid that dated back to 2010 last week — doing so with a freshman backup at quarterback after the first-teamer was ejected in the opening quarter. The Redmen must somehow rediscover some of the preseason promise that was rampant early and put on their big-boy pads rather than sulk and throw in the proverbial towel in these trying times. And while a victory won’t necessarily get the Hitman’s homeboys off life support, it will pump some added breath into the team’s Week 11 chances. Close, but still gasping — SOUTH FULTON.
