Weakley contingent just misses state spots

There will be no Weakley County high school golfers playing in this year’s state tournament.
All six local golfers were unable to make the final cut in the Region 7A-AA tournament on Monday at The Farms in Dyersburg.
The state tournament will be on Oct. 9-10 in Manchester with Oct. 8 being a practice day.
Dresden’s Payton Williams came up one stroke short of making it a three-way playoff for third place in individuals. The top four individuals not on the winning team go to the state tournament.
Milan swept the regional tournament with both the boys and girls taking home the team championships.
Milan’s Taylor Stuckey won the boys’ individual title with a round of 81. Milan also took the girls’ individual title with Rilee Taylor besting Mollie Stone in a sudden death playoff hole. Both girls had a round of 79.
The Milan boys’ team also had to play a sudden death round against Gibson County to win region. Both teams finish edthe 18 holes in regulation with a score 355.
“This was exciting,” Milan golf coach Donny Joyner said. “This was the first time I have been involved in a whole team playoff with the boys.
“I am proud of the way the kids handled the elements. This was an awful, awful day to play. It was a tough battling day, but they hung in there.”
It was, indeed, not an ideal day for the golfers with a cold rain pelting the golfers during the morning.
A strong northwesterly wind throughout the day made matters even more difficult for the golfers.
Even with the cold rain and the wind, the greens were in very good shape. Joyner said most golfers he observed putted well. Joyner said the greens were new, having just been replaced recently.
The roughest part of playing under those conditions was not the putting, but the drives and approach shots.
“The toughest part of today was striking the ball and not letting it get off line,” Joyner said. “If you miss-hit anything on a day like this it is gone. There is no telling where the ball is going to end up.”
Westview’s Houston Haag finished seven strokes back of fourth place with a round of 92. He was one of many golfers who had difficulties with the elements.
Tony Robinson, Greenfield’s only golfer on the boys’ side, had a tournament round of 99.
On the girls’ side, McCall Scates led her Greenfield team with a round of 107. Scates finished 25 strokes back of fourth place finisher, Morgan Stuckey of Milan. Ashley Tucker shot 154 and Victoria Galey finished nine shots back of Tucker with a round of 163.
Milan had three of the top four golfers in the girls’ tournament. Stuckey and her Milan teammate, Arianna Clemmer, finished tied for third with a tournament score of 82.
Both had to play a sudden death playoff to determine the third and fourth place spots. Stuckey won the playoff in one hole.
Those golfers who are going to state as individuals in the girls’ bracket are South Fulton’s McKenzie Pane and Sydney Easterwood.
Erin Roush of Dyersburg will also be making the trip to Manchester along with Stone of Union City.
Individuals advancing from the boys’ bracket are Austin Yergin of Gibson County, Covington’s Tommy Beasley and Brad Walker. Kegan Riley of McKenzie rounds out the four individuals making the trip to the state tournament. Published in The WCP 10.2.12
