Haag youngest
‘Pop’ champion

Westview High School sophomore Houston Haag became the youngest player ever to win the Poplar Meadows Country Club championship over the weekend when he took honors in the championship flight.
The 16-year-old Haag shot 71-76 (147) in the 36-hole event to edge Matt Russell (72-78—150) and Matt Sanner 78-76—154) for the title. Sanner had won the past three club championships
Tony Maness had top honors in the 1st Flight with a 166 (85-81), three shots better than Rocky Johnson (84-85—169). Tracy Bruff (91-86—177) placed third in the division.
Jody Kizer (97-87—184) stormed from behind to claim a one-shot victory over Dan Frankum (94-91—185) in the 2nd Flight. Dave Schlager shot a pair of 96s to finish third.
In the Senior Division, past multiple-time club champion Mike Rauchle (76-77—153) won the Championship Flight with Greg Dunn and Rick Smith each coming in three shots back at 156.
Gary Gill (92-81—173) was crowned king of the 1st Flight with Pete Blanton 96-84—180) second and Charles Denaburg (94-91—185).

Weather alters
Jr. High slates

A handful of local sports contests were either postponed or canceled by inclement weather on Monday.
The Ridgemont-Hillcrest middle school softball game was put off by rain and moved to Oct. 9. That contest will be played at Obion County Central and will be the second of two games played by the Lady Mustangs that day. R’mont will face Union City at 5 p.m. before taking on Hillcrest.
Ridgemont will also play a makeup game against South Fulton, Oct. 10 at 4:15 p.m. at home.
The South Fulton at Westview prep soccer match scheduled for Monday was postponed until Wednesday afternoon at 4:30.
No makeup date was reported for South Ful-ton’s softball game at Union City.

Madison tops UC
in volleyball play

Union City dropped an 0-3 (25-10, 25-5, 25-12) prep volleyball decision to Madison Academic Monday.
Sadie Hollis and Breanna Beard each had an ace, while Raven Fair and D’Leshae Olds had one kill each for UC.
Hollis led the team in digs with 15, while Molly Maclin added eight and both Beard and Halle Kennedy had seven.
Union City will close its regular season schedule on Thursday by hosting Gibson County, a team the Lady Twisters beat 3-2 last week, at 5 p.m. Published in The Messenger 10.2.12
