| Enrollment numbers begin TSSAA process |

Step One is complete.
The Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association released the enrollment numbers of its member schools based on the first 20 days of the school year on Wednesday.
That marks the first step of the classification process for all TSSAA schools in all sports.
For the three Obion County schools, initial indications is that little — if anything — will change.
South Fulton’s enrollment of 265 and Union City’s total of 361 students keeps both in Class 1A for all sports, while Obion County Central’s list of 935 students keeps it in 4A for football and 2A for all other sports. South Fulton and Union City both increased their enrollments by 17 students from the previous classification process four years ago, while OCCHS is down by one student.
The one possible change could be Union City becoming a 2A entry for the football playoffs as the Tornadoes apparently will be near the division line between 1A and 2A.
As the process plays out over the next few weeks and months, that could all change.
The numbers, at this point, do nothing more than show schools’ enrollment and give the TSSAA and its schools a starting point for the classification process. Right now, all schools are grouped in one division.
The organization has sent letters to each school giving them the opportunity to move to Division II, the private school league.
The deadline to make that determination is noon Oct. 16. On that day, the TSSAA will then divide the schools into the two divisions, apply the multiplier to Division I private schools and then divide schools into classes and set enrollment breakpoints. The multiplier is 1.8, and no school can move up more than one class as a result.
The following day — Oct. 17 — the TSSAA will then send out letters to all schools giving them the chance to move into a larger classification. The deadline to make that choice will a week later, Oct. 24.
On Oct. 25, the TSSAA staff will set up districts and regions in all sports and send those recommendations to the Board of Control members and all member schools while also posting the breakdowns on the organization’s website, www.TSSAA.org.
The final classification process will be held Nov. 15, beginning at 9 a.m., at the Double Tree Motel in Murfreesboro. Published in The Messenger 10.4.12 |
