Mason Hall FCE meets

The Mason Hall Family and Community Education Club met recently at the community center, which was decorated for fall. Frances Williamson served as hostess.
President Frances Allen welcomed 18 women members, five men members, four visitors and Obion County University of Tennessee Extension agent Benita Giffin. Mrs. Allen read the thought for the day, “For every minute you remain angry, you give up 60 seconds of peace of mind” by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Roll call was answered to “What is your favorite fall or Halloween memory?”
Betty Luton’s devotional was from the Upper Room and was made up of three readings and scriptures: “Seek the Lord,” Mark 12:30; “Cooking for God,” 1 Cor. 12.4; and “New Habits,” Eph. 6:15. All the sick and shut-ins were remembered and she closed with prayer.
Communications included: Recognition from club projects: ALS, Habitat for Humanity, Le Bonheur, Obion County Reading Railroad and Diane Johnson.Social services for Kenton included the Juanita Lane family.
The group will be quilting in Rutherford on Saturday and in Milan on Oct. 20.
The program presented by Mrs. Giffin was very informative. Titled “Quick Bites — Let the Food Label Be Your Guide Through the Grocery Store Jungle.” Food labels and nutrition facts enable consumers to compare products based on key ingredients. When comparing products, focus on those nutrients that are important. “If you are concerned about your weight, you should compare products based on both calories and fat. If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, you should focus on the amount of total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and sodium,” she said, adding “Choose products containing less than 20 percent daily values for fat, cholesterol and sodium. If you have diabetes, you should pay attention to the amount of total carbohydrate, sugar and dietary fiber.”
She also gave a program about “How Serious is Flu? Can Flu Be Prevented? Who, When and Why You Need a Flu Shot and The Side Effects from the Flu Shot.”
The apron extravaganza will be Friday in Jackson. Mrs. Giffin will be attending and will be taking two aprons which Mary Louise Davis is entering in the contest.
Mrs. Allen asked each member to make cookies or brownies for the state convention Nov. 12-14.
The next Obion County Fair will be Aug. 12-17, 2013. Special categories include: Sewing — two holiday placemats with napkins (any holiday); Adult Hobbies and Crafts — decorated sweatshirt (must be structurally changed); Canning — three different tomato products in pint jars in a decorative container; Culinary — plate of six decorated cupcakes (two each of three different holidays, one for tasting and one for exhibit); Senior Citizens — crocheted doily; Photography — stormy weather; and Adult Art — bird(s) and bloom(s).
The next meeting will be Nov. 1. Visitors are welcome.
