Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church news

Posted: Thursday, October 11, 2012 6:00 pm
By: By P. Durwood Worley

t was another great day at Hopewell Sunday. Our Sunday school attendance was down, but we still had a great lesson with much discussion lead by Tom McCutchen.

In contrast to the attendance for Sunday school, our attendance in morning worship was up, mainly in part to one couple of the church coming in separate vehicles. They brought seven first time visitors: two adults and five children. The five children included beautiful twin sisters and handsome twin brothers.

Kevin Hazlewood was the pianist and Lonnie Hazlewood was the song leader. They also blessed us with a duet, titled “Where Could I Go But to the Lord?” Larry Morgan played and sang, “My Tribute.”

The Session reported that Lonnie Hazlewood, Tom McCutchen and Bro. Durwood Worley attended Presbytery the day before. Bro. Worley was approved to be the pastor of Hopewell. That was only a required formality.

Absent were Jim and Shirley Jean Washburn due to the hospitalization of Shirley’s father, Wilburn Gardner. He passed away Monday night at the hospital in Union City. At the time of writing this news, visitation will be Thursday at the Williams Funeral Home in Sharon, and the funeral service at Beech Grove Community Church Friday. Our sympathy and prayers go out to the family of Wilburn Gardner.

The pastor’s sermon was, “Jesus, the Perfect Pattern and Example.” The lyrics of a song by W. A. Ogden, “Sweet are the promises, kind is the word, dearer are than any message man ever heard. Pure was the mind of Christ, sinless, I see.  He the great example is, and pattern for me. Sweet is the tender love Jesus hath shown; sweeter far than any love that mortals have known.  Kind to the erring one, faithful is he. List to his loving words, ‘Come unto me’ weary heavy-laden, and there is sweet rest for thee. Trust in his promises, faithful and sure. Lean upon the Savior and they soul is secure, provided inspiration for the message.

The service concluded with the Holy Sacrament of Holy Communion. We all departed the house of the Lord with our cups full and overflowing with the joy of the Lord.
