Hillcrest tops UC
in Jr. High softball

Macey Cox struck out 13 Union City batters as Hillcrest claimed an 8-1 win over the Lady Tornadoes in middle school softball action Monday in Troy.
Audrey Myers paced the Lady Cougars at the plate with a hit and three RBI, while Lauren Ivy, Mollie Johnson and Mary Hanna Short also singled for Hillcrest, now 12-6. Short drove in a run.
Taylor Crittenden struck out five and had five put-outs from the circle in suffering the pitching loss for Union City.
She was credited with a double in the UC scorebook and drove in her team’s only run.
Defensively, Alivia Bishop, MollyBeth Blackwell and Caroline Martinek all played well for the Lady Twisters.
Both teams will play Ridgemont today at the Obion County Central High School field, UC taking on the Lady Mustangs at 5 p.m. followed by Hillcrest-Ridgemont at 6:30.
All local junior high teams will then play in the Obion County Tournament on Saturday.

OVC baseball event
staying at Pringles

The Ohio Valley Conference announced on Friday a one-year extension to its deal to hold its annual baseball championship at Pringles Park in Jackson.
The 2013 OVC Baseball Championship will be held May 22-26 at the venue which serves as the home of the Jackson Generals, the AA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. It marks the fourth-straight season the event will be played at Pringles Park.
“We appreciate the leadership and commitment the City of Jackson and the Jackson Generals have made to the OVC for making this an outstanding event for our student-athletes,” said OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche.
“We are extremely happy to continue our relationship with the OVC in hosting its baseball championship,” said Jason Compton, general manager of the Jackson Generals. “It is great for us to be able to bring a NCAA Division I Baseball Championship to Jackson and we are already looking forward to the event in May.”
Pringles Park opened in 1998 and has a seating capacity of 6,000. The venue hosted the 1999 and 2011 Southern League All-Star Games. Pringles Park also has luxury suites, a video board and merchandise shop that will be used for the championship. Jackson. is located 130 miles from Nashville and 77.2 miles from Memphis on Interstate 40.

UTM’s Barfield gets
‘special’ recognition

Junior Kevin Barfield was named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Specialist of the Week for his effort in UT Martin’s 51-37 football victory over Eastern Illinois.
Barfield, who returns kicks and plays wide receiver, set the tone in early by taking the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.
The Memphis native put the Skyhawks ahead for good just 13 seconds into the game.
Barfield finished the game with 161 all-purpose yards — 118 on kickoff returns and 43 receiving yards on five receptions, including a 29-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
UT Martin is 4-2 on the year and 2-1 in the OVC. Published in The Messenger 10.9.12
