Lady Mustangs split
with UC, Hillcrest
Ridgemont split a pair of makeup middle school softball games Tuesday, beating Union City 12-1, then losing to Hillcrest 13-5.
Against UC, Marissa French went 3-for-3 with a double, Carly Bramlett had three singles in as many at-bats and McClay Ferrell had a triple and a single for the Lady Mustangs. French struck out three in notching the pitching win.
For the Lady Tornadoes, Caroline Martinek had two hits, including a double, and scored Union City’s lone run. Taylor Whitby went 2-for-2, and MollyBeth Blackwell had the Twisters’ lone RBI. Taylor Crittendon was the losing hurler with two strikeouts and three putouts.
In the R’mont-Hillcrest game, the Lady Cougars erupted for nine runs in the third inning to improve to 13-6.
Andrey Myers knocked in four runs with three hits, while both Mollie Johnson and Lauren Ivy each had three RBIs — Johnson with two hits, including a triple, and Ivy with a triple.
Macey Cox scattered seven hits and fanned three to get the win.
For R’mont, Macy Muirhead had two hits in three trips to the dish, while French tripled.
French took the pitching loss and was relieved in the third by Kari O’Steen.
Devilettes now even
by beating McKenzie
South Fulton squared its soccer record at 7-7 with a 5-1 victory over McKenzie Tuesday.
Lexi Johnson recorded a hat trick, while Samantha Murray found the net twice for the Devilettes.
Taleeah Cross turned away 17 shots in goal for SF, which led 1-0 at the half.
SF will celebrate Senior Night Thursday with its final regular season home match against Obion Central.
Hip surgery moves
Dooley to press box
KNOXVILLE (AP) — Tennessee’s Derek Dooley is recovering from surgery on his fractured right hip and will coach from the press box Saturday at No. 19 Mississippi State.
The school announced Tuesday that Dooley had experienced increasing pain in his right hip over the last two months. Dooley underwent an MRI Friday that showed he had a fracture.
After joining his team for its Tuesday morning practice session, Dooley underwent surgery later that afternoon.
The surgery was performed by Russell Betcher and Greg Mathien of the Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic at UT Medical Center.
Dooley said after Tuesday’s practice that he had a “little hip issue, I’ll keep you updated on it,” but did reveal that he was heading to surgery.
“I wasn’t in red, but I wasn’t moving like I normally move,” quipped Dooley, referring to the red non-contact jerseys that injured players wear in practice.
Tennessee athletic department spokesman Jimmy Stanton said Dooley won’t be at practice Wednesday and that it’s uncertain whether he will be at Thursday’s practice.
Dooley will work from the coaches’ booth at the Davis Wade Stadium press conference due to limited mobility caused by the surgery. He will consult his doctors and the Tennessee sports medicine staff to see if he can return to his normal coaching duties next week.
