Former U.S. senator to speak Monday

The Messenger 02.15.08

Paul Sarbanes, former U.S. senator from Maryland and co-author of the landmark Sarbanes-Oxley legislation, will speak 7:30 p.m. Monday in Watkins Auditorium of Boling University Center at the University of Tennessee at Martin.
His speech, “Sarbanes-Oxley and the Future of American Business,” is co-sponsored by BancorpSouth, UT Martin Honors Programs, the Horace and Sara Dunagan Chair of Excellence in Banking and the American Democracy Project. It is free and open to the public.
Sarbanes co-sponsored “The Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Act,” more widely known as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Congress set out to fashion legislation that would reform accounting and corporate practices, as well as restore public and investor confidence. The act was signed into law in July 2002.
Sarbanes’ lecture is sponsored by BancorpSouth as part of the UT Martin Honors Program and Dunagan Chair of Excellence in Banking speaker series with support from the Hendrix Chair of Excellence in Free Enterprise, the American Democracy Project and the College of Business and Public Affairs Warren and Pat Carmichael Fund.
