| National Guard units recognized |

Soldiers from the Tennessee National Guard’s Union City-based 913th Engineer Co. and Trenton-based 230th Engineer Battalion were honored Saturday in Freedom Salute ceremonies in Martin.
A total of 339 Guardsmen from the two units and their families were recognized during the Saturday afternoon program at First Baptist Church in Martin.
The West Tennessee units returned home in August after a year’s deployment.
Maj. Gen. Robert Harris, assistant adjutant general, was on hand to present each soldier with a beautiful cased American flag, a ceremonial coin, a medallion and a lapel pin to commemorate their service to their country. National Guard soldiers who served more than one tour of duty received special recognition.
The prestigious Minute-man Statue and large framed flag mosaics were also presented to individuals and organizations or businesses from the two cities for their outstanding support of the units and families during deployment, according to a release sent out late Friday afternoon by the state’s military department.
Over 27,000 Tennessee Army and Air National Guardsmen have deployed since Sept. 11, 2001. Published in The Messenger 11.5.12 |
