UC-Dresden hoops
moved to January

Union City High School’s home-opening basketball game — set for Monday night against Dresden — has been postponed due to the Lions’ involvment with the Class 2A state football playoffs.
The game has been rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 3.
UC’s first home game will now be Tuesday night against Westview.
The Tornado teams will still open their 2012-13 hoop seasons on Thurday night at Chester County, then play the second of their allotted Hall of Champions games on Saturday at Covington.

Lady Cougars win
vs. Lake County

Hillcrest and Lake County divided a middle school basketball doubleheader Tuesday night, the Lady Cougars winning 32-20, while the H’crest boys were on the wrong end of a 54-17 thrashing.
Courtney Heuck had 19 points, eight rebounds and four steals in the Hillcrest girls’ victory. Teammate McClain Bell recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards, while Macey Cox hauled down seven caroms for the Lady Cougars.
It was 14-10 Hillcrest at the half.
The nightcap was all Lake County as the Falcons led 19-6 after one and 34-10 at the intermission.
There were no notable individual stats reported for the Cougars.
Hillcrest plays at South Fulton on Thursday.

Sign-ups scheduled
for OC youth hoops

The Obion County Youth Basketball League will hold its signups Saturday and then again Dec. 15 at the Obion County Central High School gym lobby.
The registration will be from 8-11 a.m.
Signup fee is $20 per player.

SF’s Spivey joins
all-star coach staff

South Fulton head coach Kelly Spivey is part of the West coaching staff for the upcoming Toyota East/West All-Star Classic high school football all-star game.
The event, slated for Dec. 8, will be staged on the turf at Overall Field on the campus of Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
Head coaches for this year’s game are Caine Ballard of Greeneville (East) and Kevin Creasy of Trousdale County (West). Both have directed their respective high school teams to state championships in the past.
Assistant coaches for the West team include Anthony Crabtree of Beech, Wes Duncan of Columbia, Jeff Porter of White House, Rahnmann Slocum of Fairley, Eric Swenson of Huntingdon and Troy Williams of Dickson County in addition to Spivey.

UTM’s Newsome gets
weekly OVC award

UT Martin junior guard Jasmine Newsome has been named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week.
Newsome helped the Skyhawks go 1-1 in their opening week of the season. In a loss to Northwestern, she scored 24 points. She led the team with 17 points in UT Martin’s home opening win over Arkansas State.
In addition to the 17 points, Newsome had five assists and five steals.
This is the ninth time in three years Newsome has been named the OVC Player of the Week.
She also was named the OVC Freshman of the Week five times.
