Jayvee tournament
begins Saturday

The Weakley County Junior High Basketball Tournament begins Saturday with four games.
Gleason plays Sharon in girls’ action at 11 a.m., followed by Greenfield vs. Gleason in boys’ action at 12:30 p.m.
Dresden and Martin will face off in girls’ play at 2, and then Martin and Sharon will close the day with a boys’ game tipping off at 3:30.
Greenfield is the top-seeded girls’ team and will play the Gleason-Sharon winner 6 p.m. Monday.
Dresden’s boys will meet the Greenfield-Gleason winner Monday at 7:30 p.m.
The finals will then be played at 6 (girls) and 7:30 on Thursday.

Lions, Chargers have
grid game all-stars

A pair of Weakley County football players will be on the field one more time.
The inaugural Sports Plus West Tennessee All-Star Game will kick off at 3 p.m. from Liberty Tech High School.
Included on the North squad will be Dresden’s Devan Raymer and R.J. Scott of Westview.
Raymer rushed for over 1,800 yards in leading the Lions to an 11-2 record and spot in the Class 2A state semifinals.
Scott was a standout on both sides of the ball as the Chargers finished with a 5-5 mark in the tough 13AA district, which had two state finalists (Milan in 3A and Covington in 4A).

UTM’s Newsome
picks up OVC honor

Jasmine Newsome, a junior guard on the UT Martin women’s basketball team, was named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for her effort this past week against Evansville, Central Ark-ansas and Missouri.
Newsome led the Sky-hawks in scoring against Central Arkansas and Missouri with 25 and 24 points, respectively.
She shot 53.1 percent from the floor over the three games.

Panthers, Lions split
in junior high hoops

Martin and Dresden split their junior high games recently, Martin winning 32-29 in girls’ play and Dresden taking a 44-24 boys’ win.
The Lion boys improved to 12-0 by outscoring Martin 30-4 in the second half. Martin led 9-8 after one quarter and 20-14 at the half, but Dresden took a 29-20 lead after three periods.
Dresser Winn had 17 points, Quincey McDonald added 12 and Brice Williams pitched in 10 for the Lions. Cameron Jones had 13 points for Martin.
Lydia Pritchett had 11 points for the Lady Panthers, who  led 30-18 after three periods.
Kasey Gallimore topped all players with 16 points for Dresden.

UTM-Purdue game
will be Alumni Day

The UT Alumni Asso-ciation will celebrate Alumni Family Day Sunday when the UT Martin women’s basketball team hosts nationally ranked Purdue at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Elam Center.
Alumni may purchase tickets at the game for a special price of $5 each when they present their UT Alumni Association membership card. Anyone who has not received the card can contact Kelly Trevathan at ktrevathen@utm.edu or at 881-3610.
Captain Skyhawk will be on hand for pictures, and there will be an inflatable slide for the children. Published in The WCP 12.6.12
