Sons of Confederate Veterans gather

Posted: Wednesday, December 19, 2012 8:00 pm

The Messenger 12.19.12

The Gen. Otho French Strahl Camp 176, Sons of Confederate Veterans, conducted its monthly meeting recently.
Commander Danny Isbell opened the meeting by leading the pledge to the U.S. flag and the SCV Flag Salute. Compatriot Bob Nichols led the opening prayer.
No program speaker was planned, as December is the month the camp elects officers. A motion was made and accepted to retain current officers for another year.
Camp members reviewed 2012 projects, including:
• The headstone dedication at the Hollomon Cemetery in Mason Hall
• The Confederate Soldier Dedication at the Parks Cemetery Ridge Confederate Memorial Plaza, along with the placement of the 13 Confederate state flags.
• The Chambers-Holman Cemetery restoration
• The Obion County Public Library display during Confederate History Month.
• The flagging of Confederate veterans graves in several Obion County cemeteries on Confederate Memorial Day.
• Beginning restoration of the M-37 military vehicle donated for sale with the proceeds to provide funds for maintaining the Trimble flag.
• Beginning the restoration of the broken Confederate headstones in the Old Union City Confederate Cemetery. Compatriot John Abernathy is in charge of this project and has completed and placed 60 headstones with about 70 remaining.
In other business:
• Marge Davis, photo contest coordinator for Scenic Tennessee Inc., confirmed the photo display will be available for viewing at the Obion County Public Library during June, July and August of 2013.
Nichols closed the meeting in prayer.
There were 12 members in attendance.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans is the nation’s largest Southern heritage, history and honor organization open to all male descendants of a Confederate soldier who served honorably in the War for Southern Independence.
