Milan, Covington
have all-staters

The runner-up teams in Class 3A and 4A had some representation on the Tennessee Sports Writers Association all-state football teams.
Milan, the 3A finalist, put five players on the team, while 4A runner-up Covington had two all-staters in its classifications.
Four of Milan’s picks came on defense as lineman Trevor Milan, linebacker Arkel Coleman, back Octavious Cook and punter Brett Hopper were tabbed. Kicker Caleb Appleton was the fifth selection.
The Chargers had one player on each side of the ball named as running back Johnston White and defensive back Carlos Williams made the list.

UTM’s Siimpson 17th
in top coach voting

UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson was one of 20 finalists for the Eddie Robinson FCS Coach of the Year Award presented by the Sports Network. He finished 17th in the balloting. Simpson, who guided the Skyhawks to an 8-3 overall record, received one first-place vote, two third-place votes, two fourth-place votes and eight fifth-place votes to finish with 23 points.
The Skyhawks 8-3 overall record is tied for the best winning percentage (.727) in the OVC. That mark also ranks as the second-highest winning percentage in UT Martin program history, behind only the 2006 OVC championship team which went 9-3.
In conference play, UT Martin tied a program record with six OVC victories against only two losses. The Skyhawks racked up 39.9 points per game against league opposition and defeated OVC regular season champion Eastern Illinois by a 51-37 margin on Oct. 6 — the Panthers’ only conference loss of the season.

Skyhawks’ Butler
earns weekly honor

Heather Butler, a junior guard on the UT Martin women’s basketball team, was named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week. The league’s sports information directors nominate and vote on the weekly honor.
This is the second consecutive week the Gibson County native has won the honor and the fifth time in six weeks a UT Martin player has claimed the Player of the Week accolade this season.
Butler led all players with 26 points against Indiana State. She recorded a pair of free throws in the first half and came back to net 24 points in the second stanza.
