| Hornbeak mayor looks forward to new year |

It’s about to be a new year for a new mayor in Hornbeak.
Newly-elected Hornbeak Mayor Dennis Dozier is looking forward to what 2013 will bring to his town.
“We certainly do hope to be able to accomplish many things, but we’ll just take it one day at a time and see what comes up next,” he told The Messenger Thursday.
He said town officials are specifically on the lookout for new business for the community and he pledged to be “very cordial and to assist in any way” with any business — no matter how large or how small — which would consider locating in Hornbeak.
Among the ongoing projects which will continue into the new year in Hornbeak are annexation and the second phase of the town’s sewer system. Dozier recently told the town’s board of aldermen that the sewer project is ready for bid and a conflict which stalled progress is about to be settled.
The mayor would also like to pursue all avenues possible for the construction of a new fire station for the Hornbeak Volunteer Department in the months ahead. The town’s volunteer firefighters and first responders are a source of pride in the community and they consistently receive high praise for their willingness to respond quickly and without hesitation to any fire or medical emergency.
Dozier was elected as Hornbeak’s mayor in November after serving as vice mayor, and he officially took office earlier this month. He noted there have been many positive improvements in the town in recent months — including new playground equipment for the city park and a new walking track.
In the near future, he said people will be asked to serve on the town’s planning and zoning boards in an effort to move forward with even more improvements.
Some items to be addressed in the future include delinquent taxes, a problem with dogs running at large, unpaid grave plots and property maintenance, according to Dozier, who said he wants to attract people to Hornbeak and have residents be proud to live there.
Town officials have also expressed a desire to see some street paving completed in the coming year.
Since taking office, Dozier has also implemented an official complaint form which is available at Hornbeak City Hall for citizens to express any concerns and he has set the bar high by urging aldermen to lead by example in their community.
