Weather changes prep hoop dates The wintery mix of precipitation that moved through West Tennessee on Tuesday afternoon and evening forced all four Weakley County high schools to change their plans for prep basketball. All games on Tuesday night were postponed, and all have already been rescheduled. Greenfield will play at Bradford tonight, Dresden will travel to Huntingdon on Saturday, Gleason will visit West Carroll on Jan. 24 and Westview will be at Dyersburg on Jan. 28. All four schools will be back in action Friday night — Westview hosting Haywood, Dresden entertaining Big Sandy, Greenfield traveling to Trenton and Gleason hosting Carroll Academy. Sims, Hughes make Raycom roster Quentin Sims, a wide receiver on the UT Martin football team, and Skyhawks’ defensive lineman Montori Hughes will play for the Stripes team in the Raycom Football All-Star Classic in Montgomery, Ala., Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Sims, an All-Ohio Valley Conference first-team selection and a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) third team All-America honoree, had 86 catches for 1,092 yards and 16 touchdowns this season. The 16 touchdowns in one year is a new OVC record. Hughes, who transferred to UTM from Tennessee, finished the regular season with 42 tackles, 8.5 TFLs, four sacks and 13 quarterback hurries. The Murfreesboro native was named to The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS second team All-America defensive squad, the All-Ohio Valley Conference first-team defense and the Phil Steele FCS first-team All-American team. The Stripes team will be coached by former NFL coach and Super Bowl winner Dan Reeves, while the head coach of the Stars team will be Jim Bates, a 17-year defensive genius. The game has a television contract with CBS Sports. Skyhawk football gets high grades The UT Martin football team finished this past season with an 8-3 record on the field. More success followed off the field and in the classroom. Forty members of the football team, almost half the squad, made at least a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA), while 30 players made the Dean’s List and four made a perfect 4.0 GPA. “This is the best the team has done since I have been here at UT Martin,” head football coach Jason Simpson said. For the second consecutive semester, all student-athletes at UT Martin earned at least a 3.0 or better. One semester removed from a school-best 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA), the student-athletes earned a 3.05 GPA for the Fall 2012 semester. UT Martin runners post good marks The UT Martin cross country teams accounted for a 3.4 cumulative Grade Point Average in the fall, head coach Gordon Sanders has announced. Overall, the Skyhawk cross country teams combined for 13 honorees on UT Martin’s Dean’s List.
