UCMS girls earn title game spot Union City limited Northview to just four points in the first half in claiming a 37-28 win in their Small Area Tournament middle school girls’ tournament game Wednesday night at the Union City High School gym. The Lady Tornadoes (9-8) will now play Lake County in the championship game 6 p.m. Saturday. Tykesha Vaughn led UC with 21 points, while Alivia Bishop added nine points. Union City led 9-3 after one quarter and 18-4 at the half. The difference was 28-13 after three periods. McKenzie’s Hayes going to Reds camp Former McKenzie High School and Bethel University pitcher Drew Hayes has been invited to the Cincinnati Reds big league spring training camp. Hayes, who also played at Vanderbilt, pitched last season for Double-A Pensacola. Hayes had 64 strikeouts in 631⁄3 innings last season and was awarded the 2011 MLB.com Class A Relief Pitcher of the Year with 22 saves. He will report to the Major League camp Feb. 11. Hayes is the son of Glenn and Joyce Hayes of McKenzie. The elder Hayes is the former athletics director and baseball coach at Bethel. Published in The Messenger 1.24.13 |
