Hoop squads’ final dates fill up
By MIKE HUTCHENS
Messenger Sports Editor
With the clock rapidly ticking toward the end of prep basketball’s regular season, the last couple of weeks just got busier.
The Obion County School System’s decision to shut down today and Friday and postpone all extracurricular activities until Monday due to a second outbreak of flu this winter has left both Obion Central and South Fulton scrambling for dates to get in their remaining district dates.
Central, which was scheduled to host South Gibson Friday and Ripley Saturday — the latter already a once-postponed game — will now play Ripley Monday night. The contest vs. South Gibson has yet to be rescheduled, according to OCCHS Athletic Director Craig Rogers.
In all, Obion Central will play four games next week — twice on back-to-back days (Monday-Tuesday, Friday-Saturday).
The Rebels already have a home contest against Haywood in the Feb. 2 slot, that game also an earlier postponement.
Those dates join an original remaining slate that includes Jan. 29 at Milan, Feb. 1 at home vs. Crockett County, Feb. 5 at home against Westview, and Feb. 8 at Covington.
The first round of the District 13AA Tournament is scheduled to begin on Feb. 9.
South Fulton is also running out of time to complete its District 14A slate.
The Red Devils’ game with Union City scheduled for Friday night has been moved to Feb. 7, UC canceling its twinbill with Dresden to accommodate the change.
SF had already moved a postponed contest with Trenton to next Saturday and, in that doubleheader, the Big Red boys will play first and the girls second to give Wes Miller the opportunity to then leave and coach the SFMS boys in the sectional tournament in Martin should South Fulton advance to that level.
SFHS already has home games scheduled next week against Lake County on Tuesday and Halls Friday.
Union City’s down-the-stretch schedule is also full.
In addition to their aforementioned postponement with South Fulton, the Tornadoes also have a make-up game at Lake County slated for Monday, Feb. 4.
The Twisters have games scheduled for Saturday night at Liberty, at Trenton on Tuesday, then at home vs. Greenfield next Friday.
The Area 5 Middle School Tournament — scheduled to begin tonight at South Fulton — has been moved back to Monday. The semifinals will then be played on Wednesday, with the championship of both the girls’ and boys’ events scheduled for Thursday.
Games will be played at 5, 6:15 and 7:30 Monday night, then at 4, 5:15, 6:30 and 7:45 in the semifinal round Wednesday.
The championships Thursday are set for 6 and 7:30 p.m.
The West Sectional is then slated to begin on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Martin Middle School.
