UCMS boys reach
tourney title game

Union City built an early lead  and added to it in each quarter for a 44-27 win over Three Oaks in the semifinals of the Small School Area Middle School Tournament Thursday night at Union City High School.
The Twisters advanced to Saturday night’s championship game where they will face third-seeded Halls, which upset No. 2 Lake County in Thursday’s other semi.
The UC-Halls matchup at 7:30 Saturday night will follow a girls championship matchup between Union City and Lake County at 6 p.m.
The Golden Tornado boys jumped out to an 11-5 lead after one quarter in Thursday’s semifinals and extended that to 18-10 and 29-17 at the end of the next two frames.
Willaevion Burton topped all players with 19 points, while Jeremy Bumpus pitched in 10 for the Twisters. Quentrail Polk had seven points, and both Jermize Weddle and Jamarquay Brooks added four each.

Registration set
for county leagues

There will be two sign-ups for boys and girls ages 4-12 looking to participate in Obion County baseball’s T-ball through Little League.
Registration for Hillcrest and Lake Road students will be held Tuesday and Feb. 5 at Troy First Baptist Church and the Woodland Mills Civic Center from 5-8 p.m.
The registration fee of $20 is due at the time of sign-up.

Skyhawks’ Sims
on Top 50 list

Quentin Sims, a senior wide receiver at UT Martin, has been named one of the 50 best student-athletes in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. Sims was named to the College Sporting News 2012 Fabulous Fifty All-America team.
Sims helped the Skyhawks finish the season with an 8-3 record.
The Cincinnati native made 86 catches for 1,092 yards and 16 touchdowns this season. The 16 touchdowns in one year is a new OVC record.
He was also an All-Ohio Valley Conference first-team selection and a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) third team All-America honoree. He recently played for the Stripes team in the Raycom All-Star Classic in Montgomery, Ala.

UTM’s Newsome
gets national honor

Jasmine Newsome, a junior guard on the women’s basketball team at UT Martin, has been named College Sports Madness National Mid-Major Player of the Week for her effort against Southeast Missouri State and Morehead State. She also was named Madness’ Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week.
Newsome scored 36 points at Southeast Missouri and 27 points against Morehead State.

Canaan leads MSU
to win over Tech

NASHVILLE (AP) — Isaiah Canaan scored 15 points and Murray State outscored Tennessee Tech by 14 points in the second half en route to a 47-39 victory in an OVC game on Thursday.
Ed Daniel contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds for Murray State (15-4, 6-1).
 which has won four games in a row.
Jud Dillard had 12 points and five rebounds, and Dennis Ogbe contributed 10 points and six rebounds for Tennessee Tech (7-12, 1-6). The Golden Eagles have lost three in a row and eight of nine.
The Racers shot 34 percent from the field (16-of-47) to 25.5 percent for the Golden Eagles (13-of-51).
Trailing 26-20 at halftime, Murray State tied it at 32-all on Daniel’s two free throws with 10:01 left.
Brandon Garrett’s three-point play gave Murray State a 41-34 lead with 5:50 remaining, enough of a cushion to claim the victory.
