Lady Charger teams trade places in 2A poll

Posted: Wednesday, January 30, 2013 12:00 pm

Westview and Covington simply traded places.
Covington’s 46-40 win over Westview in their District 13AA showdown at Covington moved the host Lady Chargers to the No. 2 spot and the visiting Lady Chargers down to No. 5 in this week’s Associated Press Class AA girls’ state basketball poll.
Going into the much-anticipated meeting, Westivew had been No. 2 and Covington No. 5.
Westview got off to a good start this week with a 51-47 win over Dyersburg on Monday night and has lost two only two teams — both among the top squads in their respective classifications. Union City, No. 1 in single-A for the third consecutive week, is the only other team with a win over the Lady Chargers, now 21-3 overall and 13-1 in 13AA.
Westivew and Covington are the only rural West Tennessee teams ranked in 2A. Grainger (23-0) picked up all 16 first-place votes to keep a firm grip on the No. 1 spot.
McMinn Central moved up one spot to No. 3, and Cannon County jumped two spots to No. 4 in this week’s 2A girls’ poll.
Following Westiview, Livingston Academy is sixth, Knoxville Fulton is seventh, defending state champion CPA is tied for eighth with Creek Wood, and Elizabethton is 10th.
Riverdale is ranked No. 1 in the 3A girls’ poll, and Ensworth remains the top-ranked private school.
University School of Jackson is ranked fifth in the Division II poll, and no area squads made the grade in 3A this week.
In the boys’ polls, Covington is up one spot to third and Jackson South Side is down two spots to No. 4 in Class AA, Dyer County is seventh in triple-A and Union City is sixth in the 1A poll. Published in The WCP 1.29.13
