OC quickly strikes back
What a difference six nights make.
Less than a week after being pummeled by 39 points at Ripley, the Obion Central boys got a measure of revenge with a 53-50 victory over the Tigers Monday at Troy.
“Give credit to our kids for not just mailing it in,” Rebel head coach Bill Kail said of his team’s effort. “Hopefully, it can be a spark for us, because the rest of the week will decide a lot as far as our seeding for the district tournament.”
The contest was a makeup game that was originally scheduled for Dec. 7 and one of four for the OC teams this week. Central plays at Milan tonight, celebrates homecoming Friday vs. Crockett County, then hosts Haywood Saturday in another makeup game.
The Obion Central girls had little trouble winning Monday’s opener, 60-30.
Other prep games tonight have Union City at Trenton and Lake County visiting South Fulton for a pair of District 14A twinbills.
OC 53, Ripley 50 (B)
The Rebels (11-10 overall, 5-7 in 13AA) posted their stunning turnaround victory despite missing eight consecutive free throws in the fourth quarter.
Ripley, which won the earlier meeting 77-38, did not score in the final period after carrying a 50-45 lead into the final frame.
OC led 17-12 after the first quarter before the visiting Tigers used a 21-8 burst in the second stanza to take a 33-25 lead into the halftime lockerroom.
Zack King led Central with 16 points while Shaw Logan added 14. Bryan Morris, playing with a painful groin injury, added seven points.
OC 60, Ripley 30 (G)
The Central girls barely broke a sweat in their second blowout of Ripley.
The Lady Rebels won an earlier meeting 62-23.
OC (19-6, 10-2) bolted to a 17-2 lead in the first three minutes of Tuesday’s rematch and then shifted into cruise control while dropping out of its fullcourt pressure.
Head coach Lyle LaRue substituted freely thereafter as the Rebel girls built a 38-12 halftime advantage.
Brandi Goodman tallied a team-high 20 points and 14 of the 16 OC players to see action tallied in the scorebook. Published in The Messenger 1.29.13
