MARTIN – A Westview High School student was back home recovering Monday after he was involved in what could have been a life-threatening vehicle accident Friday.

Cameron Cates, a 17 year-old junior, was thrown from the SUV he was driving when it  hit an icy patch on the road about 7:25 on Friday morning. The SUV hit a guard rail. The accident occurred on the overpass by Tom Taylor Automotive, where a marker directs drivers to go towards Milan.

Cates, the son of UTM baseball coach Victor Cates, was transported to Martin Volunteer Hospital, where medical staff were concerned with a blood clot between his brain and skull, his mother, Ann Cates, told the Press.

Cameron Cates was sent to Vanderbilt’s trauma ICU on Friday but released Sunday.

“It’s just God’s hand at work,” Ann Cates said. “There’s not a human way to explain why he’s not in a totally different place right now.”
