Dresden girls grab top seed from 13A

Posted: Wednesday, February 6, 2013 12:00 pm

Two Weakley County high school girls’ basketball teams took a step closer to laying claim to regular season district titles.
Dresden beat Clarksburg 68-32 Friday and is tied for first place with Huntingdon after the Fillies beat Gleason Friday 53-38. Both teams have a 13-2 District 13A record.
The Lady Lions swept the season series with the Fillies, which gives Dresden the tiebreaker if both teams finish tied for first place.
No. 5-ranked Westview used a strong third period to beat archrival Gibson County 64-37 on Friday. The win keeps the Lady Chargers in a first place tie with Covington in District 13AA with a 15-1 record.
Dresden’s boys beat Clarksburg 55-46 on Friday and, at 12-3 in the district, can finish no lower than third in the standings.
Westview’s boys showed they can still put points on the scoreboard in bunches on Friday with an 86-50 win over Gibson County.
Dresden 68, C’burg 32 (G)
The Lady Lions are riding high in first place after demoralizing Clarksburg in the first period.
Kayla Hayes scored 10 of her 14 points in that opening frame as the Lady Lions roared to a 25-3 lead.
The hapless Lady Rockets could not stop the onslaught in the second, either, with the Lady Lions outscoring Clarksburg 16-5 for a 42-8 halftime lead.
Amy McAlpin led all scorers with 17 points. Carrie Hatchel and Ashlee Garner each scored eight points.
Westview 63, GC 37 (G)
It is usually a close game when the Lady Chargers and Lady Pioneers meet on the basketball court, and it was Friday — for a half.
Westview turned up the pressure in the third period and outscored GC 24-3 to break open the tight game.
Westview head coach Sean Stephenson was not happy about his team’s defensive effort in the first half, so he challenged his players at the break to put the pressure on. It worked as the Lady Chargers got a couple of quick steals and went on a 15-point run to open up the third.
Teddy Vincent scored 15 of her game-high 31 points in the pivotal third period.
Westview had a narrow 30-24 lead at the half with GC scoring 10 of its 24 first half points on offensive rebounds.
Tiffany Rechis scored 11 points for Westview with Kendall Leyhue tossing in eight.
Dresden 55, C’burg 46 (B)
The Lions used a 17-7 first quarter to build up enough of a lead to hold on for the nine-point win.
Dresden led 32-20 at the half, but the Rockets came back in the third period with 17 points while holding the Lions to nine to make it a 41-37 game. Dresden then outscored the Rockets 14-9 over the final eight minutes to secure the win.
Kaleb Houston led the Lions with 16 points followed by Austin Maxey with 13. Austin Daniel scored 12.
Westview 86, GC 50 (B)
The Chargers were one point shy of scoring half of the Pioneers total points in the first period alone.
Westview manhandled GC with a 24-6 first period and led 52-18 at the half.
The Pioneers finally got some offense in the third period by scoring 24 points, but the Chargers put 21 points on the scoreboard themselves to lead 73-42 after three periods of play.
Five Chargers scored in double-figures with Javier Gordon leading with 17 points. Jazell Baker scored 14, followed by Antonio Hogard and Zavion Wright with 11 points each. Published in The WCP 2.5.13
