|Both Union City and South Fulton are streaking toward the finish line of the regular season.
The two state-ranked Tornado teams continued their winning ways at LC, the No. 1 girls rallying for a 51-42 triumph — their 11th straight — and the fifth-rated Twister boys recording a 61-46 verdict for their ninth win in their last 11 outings.
SF, meanwhile, is now 11-1 in its last dozen girls’ outings and 18-5 overall after beating Gleason 52-36 Monday.
The Red Devil boys have won five in succession after blowing out the Bulldogs 76-36.
Union City and South Fulton close their respective regular seasons Thursday night with a meeting at the Tornado gym.
SF first plays Twin-Cities rival Fulton City tonight.
All four teams will then move on to the District 14A Tournament next week.
Three of the four squads — both Union City clubs and the Red Devilettes — will host opening round games, while the South Fulton can still finish among the top four and host as well.
The following is a recap of Monday’s games.
UC 51, Lake Co. 42 (G)
The Lady Tornadoes were good when it counted, outscoring Lake County 20-7 in the final period to win their 11th straight game.
Tory Reedy, Raven Fair and Kristian Davis all had big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to turn the momentum, and then Reedy knocked down all four of her free throw tries in the final minutes to put the game on ice.
In a slow-paced game, UC led 9-6 after the first quarter, but then the Lady Falcons forced several turnovers out of their zone defense in the second period to grab a 24-22 halftime advantage.
The style continued to favor Lake County in the third period with the home team carrying a 35-31 advantage into the final frame.
Reedy was the only UC player in double figures with 10 points, while Fair, Kealie Reaves and Jackie Hudson, who spent much of the night in foul trouble, finished with nine each. All of Fair’s points came on treys.
Tiana Gray led all players with 16 points, and Shamon Pearson added 13 for the Lady Falcons.
SF 52, Gleason 36 (G)
The Red Devilettes shut down Gleason’s offense in the second half to turn a halftime deficit into a comfortable win.
SF trailed 23-20 after 16 minutes of play but then outscored the Lady Bulldogs 32-16 after the intermission in improving to 18-5 on the season.
Taleeah Cross topped all scorers with 25 points while grabbing two steals and dishing out two assists. Laken Haley added 17 points and six rebounds for the Devilettes.
Gleason (18-7) was led by Briana Jones with 16 points, 12 coming in the first half.
After trailing throughout the first half, SF went ahead 39-34 at the end of three frames. Cross and Haley powered the Devilette rally, Cross hitting three 3-pointers and Haley adding two treys.
Cross was part of SF’s switching defense that clamped down on Jones in the second half, guarding the Lady Bulldog shooter throughout much of the fourth quarter.
UC 61, Lake Co. 46 (B)
The Golden Tornadoes, who’ve already clinched the 14A regular season title and top seed for the upcoming district tournament, beat Lake County handily for the second time in as many meetings this year.
UC (12-1 in league play and 17-7 overall) led 15-7 after one, 26-17 at the half and by as many as 22 in the fourth quarter.
The Twisters sported a balanced scoring attack with Jamie Hyde and Donte Simpson scoring 13 points apiece, Marcus DeBerry 10, Malik Stockdale nine and Khiry Lewis eight.
Union City made 15-of-15 foul shots in the second half and was 18-of-23 for the game.
SF 76, Gleason 36 (B)
The Redmen (15-9) barely broke a sweat against the Bulldogs (2-20).
South Fulton led 27-5 after one and 47-13 at the half before cruising over the final two frames.
Ryan Moore had 11 points and Tevaris James 10 in a evenly-spread scorebook for the winners.
Keyshawn McManus totaled eight rebounds. Published in The Messenger 2.5.13
